Japan is facing a new inflation surge in June 2026, with rising energy costs linked to ongoing instability in the Middle East pushing up household expenses nationwide. Nine of Japan’s ten major power companies will raise electricity bills, while all major city gas providers are also increasing rates. Okinawa Electric Power customers will see the largest increase, while Kansai Electric Power remains the only major utility keeping prices unchanged.
The impact extends beyond utilities. According to Teikoku Databank, 1,078 food and beverage products will become more expensive in June—more than 13 times higher than the number affected in May. Major increases will hit seasonings, spices, condiments, furikake, instant noodles, natto, canned foods, and other daily necessities as manufacturers pass on higher raw material, transportation, and packaging costs.
Experts warn that this trend is expected to continue through summer. More than 2,200 additional food products are already scheduled for price hikes in July. To help ease the burden, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s government plans to provide temporary electricity and gas subsidies from July through September, potentially reducing average household utility bills by 1,500 to 2,000 yen per month during the hottest months of the year.
