𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗶𝗿, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗲.

Philippine statistics show:
19.5% of Filipinos aged 15 and up are smokers.
41.7% of Filipino youth are exposed to secondhand smoke inside enclosed public spaces.
29.3% of Filipino youth are exposed to secondhand smoke inside their own homes.
More than 112,000 Filipinos die each year of tobacco-related diseases.

These aren't just statistics. They're lives at risk. Smoking is entirely your choice but the smoke you exhale isn't entirely yours. It enters your child's lungs, your spouse's bloodstream, your parents' bodies.. if the numbers don't frighten you, maybe this will: One cigarette stick or v**e at a time, you're slowly killing the people you love the most.

If you can't quit for yourself, quit for the people breathing your smoke. It's time to love yourself harder - love them harder too.

Thyroid diseases are often considered a lifelong diagnosis. Thus, it is best managed with consistent and regular follow up with your physician. Medication may also be lifelong but it is always manageable. In fact, people diagnosed with a thyroid disease usually go on to live normal lives.

Iodine is a trace mineral required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. With salt iodization, iodine deficiency disorder has been significantly reduced worldwide. However, more iodine is not necessarily better when it comes to your thyroid. Inadequate iodine intake may contribute to hypothyroidism and goiter while excessive intake can cause both hypo- or hyperthyroidism and autoimmune thyroiditis.

Iodine supplementation is usually unnecessary in countries with iodized salt, and people who are maintained on a well-balanced diet. Certain high-risk groups such as pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, have low thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and have restrictive diets might require supplementation. Consulting your doctor before starting any iodine supplements is best.

A thyroid nodule is an abnormal growth of thyroid cells that forms a small lump in the thyroid gland. They often don't have symptoms and are typically found incidentally during a check-up. Around 50% of people aged 60 years old are found to have a thyroid nodule. Not to worry though since 90% of thyroid nodules are benign. However, since a small percentage can still be cancerous, proper evaluation is needed when a thyroid nodule is identified.

It is no secret that thyroid hormone imbalances can mimic mental health disorders. In fact, any patient suspected to have a mental health disorder will undergo a battery of laboratory tests, one of which is the thyroid function test. Hyperthyroidism for one, may mimic symptoms of mania and/or psychosis. Hypothyroidism on the other hand, can mimic depressive symptoms. So next time you notice yourself in a mood, ask yourself. Is this really how I feel or do I need to have my thyroid checked?

Women have higher risk for thyroid diseases, especially autoimmune thyroid disease, mainly because of s*x differences in immune function. At different life stages, women may experience profound physiologic changes associated with the timing and presentation of thyroid disease. Aside from menopause and natural aging, pregnancy seems to be the time when women are most at risk for thyroid autoimmune disease.

Pregnancy increases thyroid hormone requirements during the first trimester to meet the demands of maintaining the pregnancy. Postpartum, there is an even higher risk for thyroid dysfunction as the mother's immune system rebounds after being suppressed during pregnancy to avoid attacking the baby.

Glucose metabolism is closely linked to changes in your thyroid hormones. In fact, type 2 diabetes often occurs together with thyroid dysfunction, especially in hypothyroidism. Many people don't know it but T3 has direct control of insulin-secreting cells in the body. More T3 = increased response of insulin-secreting cells to glucose, and less T3 has the opposite effect. Some anti-diabetic drugs can also influence thyroid function. Metformin, for example, can reduce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) - a hormone that stimulates production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. This is why regular follow up with your doctor is needed to ensure adequate medication dosing, even moreso when you have both type 2 diabetes and any thyroid dysfunction.

Today, as we mark the beginning of International Thyroid Week, we also celebrate World Thyroid Day! 💜 As promised, here is your thyroid fact for the day: Though often ignored, your thyroid actually controls your body's metabolism.

Your thyroid is an endocrine gland that produces 3 hormones - thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin. The major players in your body's metabolism are the T3 and T4 hormones. T4, the inactive form, is converted into T3, the biologically active hormone. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) induces decreased body metabolism, resulting the weight gain. In contrast, an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) increased your body's metabolism, causing weight loss.

Follow us and stay tuned to learn more about your thyroid! 💜
