Spend a day of cancelled sessions with me.

No, it is not a free day. 😂

One thing people don't always see is that speech therapy doesn't only happen during that one hour with your child. We spend a surprising amount of time thinking about our kids even when they're not in front of us.

📲 Check my phone
My feed is basically crafts, DIYs, sensory activities, and whatever my kids are hyperfixated on that week. If I see something that makes me think, "Oh, ____ would LOVE this," it gets saved for the next session.

Moreover, I also respond to inquiries whether it is from incoming students or parents who may have questions about our previous questions

📝 Paperwork
As fun as therapy looks, someone has to write the reports, update the data sheets, and make sense of all the progress we're seeing

📚 I study. A lot.
Whether it's a paid course, a free webinar, or reading the latest research, continuing education isn't optional in a profession that's constantly evolving. If SLP is expected to grow, so should I

✂️ Make or hunt for materials.
Sometimes I'm printing. Sometimes I'm laminating. Sometimes I'm calculating how many goals I can target using one toy.

😴 Rest
I refuse to wear burnout as a badge of honor. My kids deserve a therapist who is regulated, present, and genuinely happpy to be in the room.
..and that's my free day! :)

While I don't have any life-changing lessons to share about Minions and Monsters, I do recommend watching it because it's genuinely funny. The kids will love the slapstick comedy, while the adults will probably catch all the references and jokes made just for them. 😉

As a speech-language pathologist though... I can't help but turn almost everything into a therapy activity. 😂 Here are a few speech and language goals you can target while watching:

1. Sequencing
After a scene, ask your child, "What happened first? Next? Then? Last?" This helps build narrative skills, memory, and organization of ideas.

2. Predicting what will happen next
Pause before an important moment and ask, "What do you think will happen next? Why do you think so?" This encourages flexible thinking, problem-solving, and using context clues to make logical predictions.

3. "What do you think the Minions are saying?"
Even though Minion language is mostly gibberish, their intonation, facial expressions, gestures, and body language tell us a lot. Ask your child to infer what a Minion might be saying or feeling based on these nonverbal cues. This is a wonderful way to practice social communication, perspective-taking, and understanding that communication is much more than just words.

Sometimes the best speech and language activities don't look like therapy at all. They look like movie night. 🍿💛

"Teacher, successful ang first day namin!"
"Umiyak siya, pero bibo na rin siya nung nagsimula na ang activities."
"Sumali siya sa dance!"
"Nag-share siya ng food!" 🥹

Nakakatuwa makatanggap ng mga ganitong messages (opo, nababasa ko po lahat kahit medyo late ang replies 😅) at makita ang inyong first-day-of-school uploads. Every little story feels like a celebration.

Tipong... konti na lang, hindi niyo na ako kailangan. 💛 sa totoo lang, iyon naman talaga ang goal ko from the very start—to help our kids become more independent, confident, at ready to take on the world.

If today was a little wobbly naman, okay lang 'yan! First day is not a forever day. Give your child—and yourself—permission to get used to the new routine. 😊

Lagi ko ngang pinapaalala sa parents: akala natin tayo lang ang may gustong pumasok sila sa school at makipagkwentuhan o makipaglaro. Ang totoo, mas gusto nila iyon. To be human is to interact. Minsan kailangan lang nila ng tamang support, isang ligtas at inclusive na environment, at mga taong handang umunawa para maipakita nila iyon.

Happy first day, first week, first month of school sa ating lahat!
..parating na ang Nutrition Month haha

I recently watched Toy Story 5, and here are some of my takeaways as both a mom and a speech therapist.

In the movie, the toys find themselves competing with gadgets. Kids aren't playing with toys as much anymore because they're glued to their screens.

Sound familiar? 😅

⚠️ Spoilers ahead ⚠️

What I appreciated about the movie is how it framed the problem. In fact, I think many of the parents I work with would agree that this is something I talk about all the time.

Throughout the film, they emphasized that:
• Devices are toys too—just modern versions of them.
• Devices do what we ask them to do. They're tools, not inherently good or bad.
• The world adapts. Even the toy makers released updated versions of Buzz to keep up with the times.

Personally, I will never advocate for using gadgets as a distraction or relying heavily on passive screen time.

But I am absolutely in favor of using technology to improve our quality of life.

After all, gadgets are tools. What matters is how we use them.

Here are some ways I use technology in my work:
📱 Conduct teletherapy sessions
🗣️ Provide assisted language stimulation using high-tech AAC
💬 Communicate with families and share resources
📊 Track therapy data and progress
✂️ Create therapy materials
🎮 Play dynamic, interactive games that support learning and engagement

The goal isn't to eliminate technology from our children's lives. It's to teach them how to use it meaningfully, purposefully, and in balance with everything else that makes childhood magical. 💛

What are your thoughts on gadgets and screen time?

Wins in speech therapy may look different for each session and each child. 🌱

Sometimes it's a new word. Sometimes it's a clearer sound. Sometimes it's trying something difficult, asking for help, joining a game, or staying engaged for a little longer than before.

Progress isn't always loud or obvious, but it is there.

Here are some of the wins we celebrated last week. 💛

Every small step counts, and we're so proud of the hard work our kids put in every day.

Been challenging myself to incorporate more household items into our therapy activities. This week, I used a sponge, a can of shaving foam, and a spray bottle.

Look at some of the things we did!

✨ Sensory play / mess-free painting
🚗 Car wash adventures
🫧 "Splat!" — smashing shaving foam onto the correct answer
🍦 Pretend ice cream shop play

One of my favorite things about using everyday items is how they encourage creativity, flexibility, and play. Sometimes the simplest materials end up being the most engaging!

Last weekend, we added a power station to the therapy center to help keep our kids comfortable and engaged—even when the power decides to take a break. 🤣⚡

While we're hoping we won't need to use it anytime soon, it always pays to be prepared.

Here's to fewer interruptions, smoother sessions, and a little extra peace of mind for everyone. 💙

New toy = new possibilities ✨

But before I even bring it into sessions, I have a little system:

• Unbox
• Check for any choking hazards
• Brainstorm how to make it last long
• List down ALL the goals I can target with just one toy
• Think of ways to modify it so it’s accessible for everyone in my caseload

In therapy, it’s never just about the toy—it’s how you use it 💛
