Why does your brain keep finding evidence for what you already believe?

Clinically, this phenomenon is known as:

🧠 **Confirmation Bias**

Confirmation bias is the tendency to notice, remember, and prioritize information that supports existing beliefs...

while overlooking information that contradicts them.

In simple terms:

Your brain often looks for proof that it's already right.

For example:

If you believe:

⚠️ "People don't like me."

Your brain may focus on:
• A delayed reply
• A neutral facial expression
• A missed invitation

While ignoring:
• Positive interactions
• Friendly gestures
• Genuine support

The same process happens with:

• Self-esteem
• Relationships
• Academic performance
• Social confidence
• Personal identity

Why?

Because the brain prefers consistency.

Predictability feels safer than uncertainty.

This involves several cognitive systems:

🧠 Attention
🧠 Memory Retrieval
🧠 Threat Detection
🧠 Predictive Processing

The brain is constantly asking:

"Does this match what I already believe?"

If the answer is yes...

that information receives more attention.

In ADHD and Autism, confirmation bias may become even stronger when combined with:

• Rejection Sensitivity
• Emotional Dysregulation
• Social Anxiety
• Negative Self-Schemas
• Repeated Experiences of Criticism

Over time, the brain can build a powerful narrative:

"I'm not capable."

"I'm always behind."

"I'll probably fail."

And then unconsciously search for evidence that supports those beliefs.

The problem?

The brain isn't always looking for the truth.

It's often looking for consistency.

The good news?

Awareness changes everything.

When you begin questioning automatic assumptions...

you give the brain an opportunity to collect new evidence.

Because sometimes the biggest thing shaping your reality...

isn't the situation itself.

It's the belief you're using to interpret it.

Follow for clinical breakdowns.
