A fibroadenoma is a common, noncancerous (benign) breast lump made of fibrous and glandular tissue. They are highly mobile, painless, and feel rubbery or firm. Often called a "breast mouse", they commonly affect women in their teens and 20s but can occur at any age.
Key CharacteristicsFeel: Smooth, firm, and easily moveable under the skin.Pain: Typically painless, though they may become tender before a menstrual period.Growth: Usually grow slowly. They can enlarge during pregnancy or shrink after menopause.
Fibroadenomas are benign and do not turn into breast cancer. While they do not significantly increase future cancer risk, new or growing lumps should always be evaluated to ensure an accurate diagnosis.Fibroadenomas are benign and do not turn into breast cancer. In most cases, no treatment is required. Many fibroadenomas remain stable or even shrink and disappear over time. Management typically involves monitoring through periodic clinical exams and imaging. Surgical removal may be considered if the lump is very large, grows rapidly, causes pain, or for personal peace of mind.
