🦷 KID’S TOOTHACHE? Here’s What Parents Should Know About Ibuprofen Syrup
When your child has a toothache, ibuprofen can help relieve pain and inflammation while you arrange a dental check-up. It does not treat the underlying cause of tooth decay, infection, or a dental abscess.
💊 IBUPROFEN DOSAGE
10 to 15 kg (approx. 1–3 years): 2.5 mL (100 mg) every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
16 to 21 kg (approx. 4–6 years): 3.75 mL to 5 mL (150 mg–200 mg) every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
22 to 32 kg (approx. 7–9 years): 5 mL to 7.5 mL (200 mg–300 mg) every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
33 to 40+ kg (approx. 10–12 years): 7.5 mL to 10 mL (300 mg–400 mg) every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
⚠️ **IMPORTANT: Ibuprofen comes in different strengths. Always check the bottle first—do not use these mL amounts if your child's syrup has a different concentration. Use the measuring syringe/cup supplied with the medicine, not a kitchen spoon.
🥛 Tips when giving ibuprofen:
• Give it with or just after food or milk to reduce stomach upset.
• Shake the syrup well before measuring.
• Do not give more than the recommended dose.
• Do not give another medicine that also contains ibuprofen.
🚨 Ask a doctor or pharmacist before giving ibuprofen if your child is very young, dehydrated, has asthma, kidney/stomach problems, or has previously reacted badly to ibuprofen or other NSAIDs.
🦷 Most importantly: Toothache should be checked by a dentist, especially if the pain persists or comes with swelling, fever, pus, difficulty opening the mouth, or difficulty swallowing. Pain medicine can provide temporary relief, but it doesn't remove the dental problem causing the pain.
