We, at Polikids Center for Development, strongly condemn bullying, public ridicule, and the use of a personโ€™s disability as a subject of entertainment.

No child deserves to be mocked because of how they communicate, behave, learn, or interact with the world. No person with autism or any disability should ever be reduced to a joke for the amusement of others.

Behind every diagnosis is a human being with feelings, dignity, and a family that hopes for understanding, acceptance, and respect. What some people may find funny can be deeply hurtful to the individual concerned and to countless families who face similar challenges every day.

Disability is not a punchline. Autism is not an insult. And a personโ€™s differences should never be an excuse to humiliate them.

Freedom of expression does not erase our responsibility to be humane. Humor should never come at the expense of another personโ€™s dignity, especially when it targets someone because of a disability or a difference they may not be able to control.

As an institution that advocates for children with diverse developmental needs, we believe that inclusion must go beyond classrooms, therapy rooms, and awareness campaigns. It must be reflected in our conversations, our content, our entertainment, and the way we treat one another in public and online.

We stand for every child and adult on the autism spectrum, for persons with disabilities, and for every family who has ever felt the pain of seeing their loved one misunderstood or made fun of.

We call on content creators, media personalities, and the public to exercise greater responsibility, empathy, and respect. Let us use our platforms to educate, uplift, and inspireโ€”not to shame or humiliate.

Let us remember: a personโ€™s worth is never diminished by a disability, but our humanity is revealed by how we treat those who are vulnerable to ridicule.

At Polikids, we will continue to stand for a world where every individual is valued, every difference is treated with respect, and every child is given the dignity they deserve.

Different abilities. Equal dignity. No room for bullying.

Hindi lang pagsasalita ang communication.

Some children and adolescents communicate through speech. Others may use gestures, facial expressions, signs, writing, pictures, communication boards, or speech-generating devices. Many use a combination, depending on the person, place, and situation (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], n.d.).

These tools and strategies may be referred to as augmentative and alternative communication, or AAC. โ€œAugmentativeโ€ means adding support to existing speech, while โ€œalternativeโ€ means providing another way to communicate when speech is not available or functional. AAC does not always involve a tablet or an electronic device. It can also include gestures, signs, photographs, letter boards, or printed pictures (ASHA, n.d.).

The people around the child also have an important role. We can help by paying attention to different forms of communication, giving the person enough time to respond, and avoiding answering for them. Active listening and increased wait time can support more effective conversations (ASHA, n.d.; Kent-Walsh & McNaughton, 2005).

The goal is not to make everyone communicate in the same way. The goal is for children and adolescents to express their choices, needs, feelings, and ideas, and to know that their message is heard.

How does your child or student usually communicate?

Note: This post is for general educational purposes. Children and adolescents with communication difficulties may have different needs. A licensed speech-language pathologist can help assess and recommend appropriate communication supports.

Our Practical Life Skills Class 4 (PLS 4) students stepped beyond the classroom and into the community as they participated in a meaningful Community Mobility activity!

Through this experience, our learners practiced essential life skills such as commuting, following directions, navigating public spaces, increasing awareness of their surroundings, and learning how to participate safely and appropriately within the community.

These real-life experiences help our learners build confidence, independence, responsibility, and greater awareness of the world around them.

A heartfelt thank you to T. Art Emberga, OTRP and T. Christian Agliday, LPT for guiding our learners and making this experience meaningful and purposeful!

Play is an important part of a childโ€™s daily life.

Through play, children practice communication, movement, problem-solving, imagination, social interaction, and emotional skills (Yogman et al., 2018). These can develop through ordinary activities that children enjoy, and not only through structured or adult-led tasks.

Adults can support play by observing what interests the child, allowing enough time to explore, and joining without immediately taking over their play. Children also benefit from opportunities to choose what and how they want to play (UNICEF, n.d.).

Play does not also require expensive toys. An empty cardboard box, paper and crayons, common household objects, music, storytelling, and familiar Filipino games can already provide many opportunities to explore and create.

Children may also enjoy different types of play. Some prefer movement and outdoor activities, while others enjoy pretend play, drawing, puzzles, music, gaming, or quieter hobbies. These interests may change as children grow.

If an activity is difficult for a child to join, simple adjustments can be made to the materials, rules, pace, position, or way of taking turns. The activity does not have to look exactly the same for everyone.

What does your child or adolescent currently enjoy doing?

Note: This post is for general educational purposes. Play activities and adaptations should consider the childโ€™s or adolescentโ€™s interests, age, abilities, and safety.

Not every learner encounters the same barrier in the classroom.

A learner may understand the lesson but have difficulty with how the instructions are presented, how much writing is required, or how they are expected to answer.

An accommodation changes how the learner accesses or demonstrates learning while keeping the important learning goal in place (CAST, 2024; Republic Act No. 11650, 2022).

Examples may include visual instructions, additional processing time, assistive technology, a quieter workspace, or another appropriate way to respond. However, accommodations should still be based on the learnerโ€™s actual needs. What helps one learner may not be useful to another, even when they have the same diagnosis.

Instead of asking, โ€œPare-pareho ba ang ginagawa ng lahat?โ€ we can ask:

โ€œWhat is getting in the way of learning, and what appropriate support can help?โ€

Fair access does not always mean identical support. Sometimes, learners need different pathways to participate and show what they know.

Note: This post is for general educational purposes. Appropriate school supports should be identified collaboratively with relevant professionals based on the learnerโ€™s strengths, needs, learning goals, and classroom participation.
