𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗖 𝗩𝗦 𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗗 𝗗𝗥𝗨𝗚𝗦
Have you ever heard that “𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙙𝙧𝙪𝙜𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙨 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨?” Let’s debunk this misconception!
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗔𝗡𝗦𝗪𝗘𝗥: 𝗡𝗢!
Generic drugs are just as 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 as brand-name drugs.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗜𝗧:
Generic drugs contain the same 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, in the same strength and dosage form, and meet strict 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 —meaning they work the same way in your body and provide the same therapeutic benefit.
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧’𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘?
A drug is identified by its generic name, based on its active ingredient, while a pharmaceutical company may give it a distinct brand name for marketing. After the relevant patent and exclusivity periods expire, other manufacturers can produce equivalent medicines using the established generic name.
Generic drugs do not have to repeat all of the costly research and development required for the original product. That’s why they can cost significantly less—not because they’re ineffective.
In fact, we can consider them as 𝗘𝗫𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗘𝗦 of their branded counterparts when they have the 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵, 𝗱𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺, 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. They are also expected to provide the 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀, although they may differ in some inactive ingredients.
𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬:
GENERICS and BRANDED drugs may be different in appearance and in some of their inactive ingredients—which generally does not affect their therapeutic effectiveness.
So, when we hear the term “𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗖,” remember that it is:
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗡𝗘.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗖 𝗘𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗧.
𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗧 𝗔 𝗟𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗧.
