Understanding SPCD 🧠💬

Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder (SPCD) isn’t about not knowing how to talk—it’s about having difficulty understanding how, when, and why we communicate in different social situations.
Sometimes, a person may take things literally, struggle with sarcasm or hints, interrupt without meaning to, or have difficulty knowing when a conversation should start or end.
💛 Be patient.
💛 Be clear.
💛 Give them time.
💛 Don’t mistake communication differences for rudeness or lack of care.
A little understanding can make communication feel a lot easier. 🫶

Behind the Scenes: Supporting the Glass Children in Therapy
Families

Behind every child in therapy is a family growing, adapting, and learning together.
When one child needs extra support, it’s easy for siblings to quietly carry emotions and experiences that often go unnoticed. These children, sometimes referred to as “glass children,” may feel pressure to always be the understanding one while navigating their own thoughts and feelings.

As parents and caregivers, small moments matter. A few minutes of undivided attention, a safe space to express emotions, and opportunities to simply be kids can make a lasting difference.
Remember: supporting one child does not mean overlooking another. Every child in the family deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued.

Beyond the Clinic: How to Bring Your Child’s Therapy Wins Home

Progress doesn’t stop when therapy ends for the day.
One of the most important goals of therapy is helping children use their skills not only in the clinic, but also at home, in school, and in everyday life.

A skill mastered during a therapy session may look different in a busy household
environment. That’s why consistency between therapists, parents, caregivers, and teachers plays such a powerful role in long-term success.

Simple strategies such as using different instructions, celebrating everyday successes, and reinforcing positive behaviors at home can help children apply their hard-earned skills across different settings.

When families and therapists work together, progress becomes more meaningful, lasting, and natural.
