Marine debris/trash, particularly plastic has contaminated nearly every ecosystem on earth - from coral reefs to mangrove forests and to inland rivers. This pervasive problem poses great risks to these critical habitats, including sea birds, turtles and other marine animals. It also affects human health and safety, food security and the planet’s climate.
The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is the largest volunteer cleanup effort which connects countries and people toward a shared goal: a healthy ocean and a thriving planet. Held on the third Saturday of September of each year, ICC volunteers remove trash/debris along shorelines, rivers, lakes and waterways and record Information on the collected trash. Data collection will not only increase our understanding of the impacts of plastic pollution globally but will guide/influence governments, corporations and industries in developing smart solutions to the marine debris problem.
Presidential Proclamation No. 470, S. 2003 further strengthened the Philippines’ commitment to the global cleanup effort. International Coastal Cleanup – Philippines (ICC Philippines), Inc., serves as the
National ICC Coordinator in cooperation with institutional partners from the government: DILG, DENR, DEPEd, and DOTr, among others. In a span of 32 years, Philippine volunteers have reached more than 4,662,555 million and collected an estimated 22,164,250 kilograms of trash/debris.
