AUGUST 2026 HIGHLIGHTS

August was a busy and meaningful month for the Department of Internal Medicine, marked by learning, assessment, and continued collaboration.

The month began with the Philippine College of Physicians Accreditation Visit, as the department welcomed Dr. Carmelita E. Llavore, Dr. Dax Ronald O. Librado, and Dr. Carmela Rosanne Remotigue. The visit was a valuable opportunity for the department to reflect on its training program and the work shared by consultants, residents, and staff.

Our academic activities continued with the Case Management Conference, where Patrick Palmares, MD presented a challenging case on prosopagnosia, seizure, and meningoencephalitis, with Mae Therese Shyala Dael, MD, FP*P as moderator. The Morbidity and Mortality Conference, presented by Iriane Jade Tabianan, MD and moderated by Genio Dominic Alujado, MD, FP*P, gave everyone a chance to look back on a difficult case and learn from it.

We also had the privilege of learning from Raye Abella-Gavile, MD, FP*P, who discussed the Care of the Adult Cancer Patient at the End of Life, moderated by Julius Joseph de la Cruz, MD, FP*P. These discussions reminded us that good medicine is not only about treating disease, but also about understanding our patients and caring for them with compassion.

Learning continued where it matters most—in the wards. Bedside teaching, resident-consultant interactions, and Direct Observation of Procedural Skills provided residents with opportunities to learn and gain confidence in procedures such as UGI endoscopy, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and lumbar puncture.

Beyond the hospital, residents and consultants also took part in continuing medical education activities, including the 4th Annual Cardiometabolic Health and Preparedness Conference and Harrison’s Hour. The month culminated in the RITE Part 1, putting months of study and clinical experience to the test.

August reminded us that residency is a journey of constant learning—sometimes in the conference room, sometimes at the bedside, and often through the experiences we share with one another. Another month of learning, growing, and becoming better physicians together.

We are now accepting Year Level 1 and Year Level 2 lateral entry applicants from P*P-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Training Programs.

If you’re looking for a supportive learning environment, dedicated mentors, and quality Internal Medicine training, we welcome you to continue your residency journey with us.

Basic Requirements for Lateral Entry:
✔️ Certification of satisfactory completion of first 6 months of YL1 training (for YL1 applicants) or of the whole year of YL1 training (for YL2 applicants) from your current institution
✔️ Certified true copy of your Annual Resident Workplace Assessment Tool (ARWAT) along with the required portfolio/supporting documents related to it for YL2 applicants. For YL1 applicants, only the initially completed ARWAT covering the first six months of training, together with its corresponding portfolio and supporting documents, is required.

📌 All transfer documents must be completed and submitted before the official start of training. The transferring resident is responsible for processing the required documents.

July 2026 Highlights

July was marked by continued excellence in clinical training, academic development, and community service as the Department of Internal Medicine remained steadfast in its commitment to producing competent, compassionate, and board-certified internists.

The month featured two major academic conferences. The Mortality and Morbidity Conference highlighted “Maybe a Week Too Late? The Cascading Consequences of Untreated Diarrheal Illness in the Elderly,” presented by Asher Obeja, MD and moderated by Francis Gabriel Relota, MD, FP*P. Meanwhile, the Case Management Conference featured “A Fluid Situation: Nephrotic Syndrome Presenting with Refractory Ascites,” presented by Iriane Jade Tabianan, MD under the moderation of Crezyl Rodriguez, MD, FP*P, fostering critical discussion on evidence-based patient management and clinical decision-making.

Residents also benefited from a Special Conference on examination strategies entitled “Architecture of Answering: Technical Testmanship and Systematic Strategy,” delivered by Patrick Joseph Mabugat, RMT, MD, with Edgel May So, MD, FP*P serving as moderator. The session provided practical techniques to improve analytical thinking and board examination performance.

In line with the department’s commitment to lifelong learning, consultants and residents actively participated in external continuing medical education activities, including the 1st Postgraduate Course: Bato-Bato PICK – Pearls in Common Kidney Problems and the P*P Negros Occidental Chapter Interhospital Grand Rounds, where Iriane Jade Tabianan, MD represented the department as a resident reactor.

Clinical competence remained a major focus through Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS), with residents demonstrating proficiency in procedures such as paracentesis and lumbar puncture under direct consultant supervision. The department also conducted the Long Examination Part I together with the Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) to assess clinical reasoning, bedside skills, communication, and professionalism in authentic patient encounters.

Beyond formal assessments, consultant-led bedside rounds and resident-consultant interactions continued to strengthen mentorship, refine clinical judgment, and promote collaborative patient-centered care.

The department likewise sustained its commitment to community engagement through another Community Outreach Program, where residents and consultants delivered health education sessions and preventive care initiatives, reinforcing the importance of health promotion beyond the hospital setting.

As July came to a close, the Department of Internal Medicine reaffirmed its dedication to academic excellence, competency-based training, and compassionate service. Through continuous learning, rigorous clinical assessment, meaningful mentorship, and community involvement, the department remains committed to developing future internists who exemplify professionalism, clinical excellence, and lifelong learning.

Happening Now | P*P Accreditation Visit at TLJPH

The Department of Internal Medicine of Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital (TLJPH) welcomes the Philippine College of Physicians (P*P) Accreditation Team as it undergoes its third-year accreditation evaluation.

Led by Dr. Carmelita E. Llavore, together with Dr. Dax Ronald O. Librado and Dr. Carmela Rosanne Remotigue, the team will evaluate the department’s residency training program as it aspires to achieve Provisional Level III Accreditation.

This milestone reflects TLJPH’s continued commitment to excellence in internal medicine training and quality patient care.

June 2026 Highlights

June was another productive month for the Department of Internal Medicine, marked by continued excellence in residency training, academic development, community engagement, and faculty collaboration.

Residents and faculty actively participated in several Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities, including Masquerade: Unmasking Infectious Diseases with Precision and Compassion and GaIN on GaIN: Gastro Initiative of Negros on Gastro Innovations 2026, reaffirming the department’s commitment to lifelong learning and evidence-based practice.

Academic activities remained at the forefront with regular Didactics and Bedside Teaching Rounds, complemented by Directly Observed Procedural Skills (DOPS) sessions that strengthened residents’ clinical knowledge and procedural competence.

The Morbidity and Mortality Conference featured Iriane Jade O. Tabianan, MD, who presented “The Unforgiving Cascade: Refractory Septic Shock Triggered by HCAP and Advanced Gallbladder Cancer in End-Stage Renal Disease,” under the moderation of Mary Ann Jocson-Gebusion, MD, FP*P. Meanwhile, the Case Management Conference was presented by Asher Obeja, MD, with the case “When Your Legs Don’t Work Like They Used to Before: Acute Polyarticular Gout Mimicking Poncet Disease in a Patient with PTB,” moderated by Julius Joseph de la Cruz, MD, FP*P.

The department also welcomed Wilson Tulmo, MD, FP*P, Head of the Neurosciences Division of the University of St. La Salle College of Medicine, for a Special Conference entitled “The Aging Brain: Can We Do Something About It?” with Gleen Rivera, MD, FP*P serving as moderator.

Residents underwent Oral Examination Part I, an important milestone in assessing clinical reasoning, medical knowledge, and decision-making as part of the department’s outcomes-based residency training program.

Beyond academics, the department remained committed to serving the community through a Community Outreach Program in Barangay Balaring, where residents and faculty provided health education, consultations, and advocacy activities to promote preventive healthcare.

The month concluded with the department’s Team-Building Activity, providing an opportunity for faculty and residents to strengthen camaraderie, foster collaboration, and reaffirm their shared commitment to delivering quality patient care and excellence in medical education.

Together, these activities reflect the Department of Internal Medicine’s unwavering commitment to excellence in residency training, patient care, academic growth, and meaningful community service.

HAPPENING NOW. TLJPH IM Residency Program Earns P*P Provisional (II) Accreditation

The Department of Internal Medicine of Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital has been granted Provisional (II) Accreditation by the Philippine College of Physicians (P*P) for its Residency Training Program.

The certificate was received by Dr. Gleen Rivera, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, during the 56th P*P Annual Congress held at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City.

This recognition affirms the department’s adherence to national standards and its commitment to delivering quality training and patient care.
