Yesterday, I told my sister, Lot, that we would visit our Auntie Iya this Sunday, July 12. Today, Lot sent me a message that Auntie Iya had passed away. I was on my 15-minute coffee break when I received the news. All I could reply was, "Ha." It didn't feel real. I still had three more sessions to get through, so I had to hold myself together and keep going. It wasn't until the end of the day, when I closed the door to my clinic, that the weight of the loss finally settled in. The sadness came all at once.
I will never get to see you alive again. I'll never get to surprise you with another birthday gift, and I'll never receive another one of your warm birthday greetings.
Rest in peace, Auntie Iya. You fought so bravely, and you left this world so peacefully. You will always have a place in my heart and in my prayers. You will always be deeply loved. And despite this heartbreak, I know I was fortunate. As the eldest niece in the family, I had the privilege of experiencing your love, care, and warmth the longest. That is a gift I will always carry with me.
I love you, Auntie Iya. Thank you for everything. May you rest in eternal peace. 💕
*Grief reminds us how deeply we have loved. Today, I'm simply a niece mourning someone who meant the world to me. Thank you for allowing me the space to honor her memory. Thank you for your understanding if my responses are slower over the next few days.
