Another Total Hip Replacement Successfully Performed at ADVH🐾

When a painful hip limits every step, what can be done?

Meet Koda, a 5-year-old Alaskan Malamute who underwent Left Total Hip Replacement Surgery last September 12 at Animal Doctors Veterinary Hospital - Tagum.

Koda was presented having mobility difficulty using his affected hind leg, signs that his hip condition was already affecting the way he moved.

For dogs with severe hip problems, these changes can mean more than simply “slowing down.” Walking, getting up, running, or playing can become increasingly difficult and uncomfortable. And when conservative treatment is no longer enough to maintain a good quality of life, Total Hip Replacement (THR) may be considered for carefully selected patients.

The procedure replaces a severely damaged hip joint with an artificial joint, with the goal of restoring hip function, stability, and long-term mobility.

For Koda’s procedure, our specialist trained Senior Surgeon Dr. John Dexter performed the surgery using the BlueSAO Bionic Biological Hip Replacement System, with the assistance of Dr. Cerdy Deloso of Deloso-Vet, together with Dr. Sheila, Dr. Sharlene, Dr. Melo, Nurse Rema, Nurse Arnel.

This marks our third Total Hip Replacement patient at ADVH, following Nix and Olaf, who underwent the first successful THR procedure performed in Mindanao at our hospital.

With every case, ADVH continues to build its experience in THR—from patient evaluation and surgical planning to the procedure and postoperative care.

If your dog has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia, experiences persistent hip pain, or is showing changes in the way they walk or move, an orthopedic evaluation can help determine what treatment options may be appropriate.

📩 Message us to inquire about an orthopedic evaluation for your pet.

Because helping a dog move better starts with understanding what is behind every painful step.

Two-Day Cardiology Care for Pets at ADVH 🫀🐾

Heart problems in pets don’t always come with obvious warning signs. Some pets may appear perfectly fine while an underlying heart condition is already developing—sometimes, the first clue is simply a heart murmur heard during a routine check-up.

Last September 10–11, Dr. Paul Cardenio, our Cardiology Consultant, provided specialized cardiac care at our ADVH Lanang and Tagum Branches.

Cardiac evaluation is especially important when a pet shows signs such as:
• Heart murmur
• Difficulty or increased effort in breathing
• Weakness or reduced tolerance for activity
• Fainting or episodes of collapse
• Persistent coughing, particularly when other cardiac findings are present

But not every pet with heart disease will show these signs early. Sometimes, a heart murmur or a routine check-up is the first clue that further cardiac evaluation may be needed.

With Dr. Paul Cardenio, assisted by Dr. Audrey and Dr. Joshue, our cardiology team provides cardiac screening and evaluation to help detect and better understand heart conditions in pets.

Your pet’s heart may not always tell you when something is wrong. A proper check-up can. ❤️

If your pet has a heart murmur, unusual breathing, weakness, fainting episodes, or other concerns, talk to your veterinarian about whether a cardiac evaluation may be appropriate.

📩 Stay tuned for more updates on our cardiology services and upcoming consultation schedules.
