Understanding Dyslexia πŸ“šπŸ’™

Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects how a person reads, spells, writes, and recognizes words. It is caused by the brain processing language differently, not by low intelligence or lack of effort.

People with dyslexia can be creative, intelligent, and talented. With early support, the right teaching strategies, and regular practice, they can become confident learners and achieve success in school and everyday life.

Remember: Dyslexia is not a disability to define a childβ€”it is a different way of learning. Every child has unique strengths and the ability to succeed. 🌟

New research suggests that temperament plays an important role in the relationship between sensory experiences, particularly heightened sensory responsiveness, and autistic characteristics. In a study of 186 autistic children aged 7–11, temperament helped explain how relate to autistic ways of experiencing and interacting with the world.

These findings reinforce the importance of understanding sensory processing and individual differences through a strengths-based, neuroaffirmative lens, supporting approaches that respect and respond to each child’s unique profile rather than seeking to change it.

🌟 Why Consistency Matters in Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT)

Consistency is one of the most important parts of Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT) because children learn best through repetition, routine, and regular practice. Just like learning to ride a bike, read a book, or tie their shoes, children need many opportunities to practice before a new skill becomes easy and natural.

Every therapy session builds on the last. While progress may not happen overnight, each small step helps children become stronger, more confident, and more independent. The skills they practice during therapy become even more effective when they are also practiced at home, at school, and during everyday activities.

Think of it like planting a seed. 🌱 Watering it once won't make it grow into a big, healthy plant. But with consistent care, patience, and daily nurturing, it grows stronger every day. A child's development works the same wayβ€”every therapy session, every home activity, and every little success helps them reach their full potential.

✨ Remember: Small, consistent steps today create big achievements tomorrow. Every practice, every routine, and every encouraging moment helps your child grow, learn, and thrive.

🌟 What Are Developmental Milestones?

Developmental milestones are exciting skills that children learn as they grow! They help us see how a child is developing in four important areas:

🧸 Movement – sitting, crawling, walking
πŸ’¬ Talking – babbling, saying words, speaking
🧠 Learning – thinking, solving problems, counting
❀️ Social Skills – smiling, playing, sharing feelings

✨ Every child grows at their own pace. Milestones are helpful guidesβ€”not a race! If your child is missing several milestones, talk to a healthcare professional for guidance and support.

🚩 Red Flag Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Every child develops differently, but these signs may mean your child needs a developmental evaluation:

πŸ‘€ Limited or no eye contact
πŸ§’ Does not respond to their name
πŸ‘‹ Does not point, wave, or use simple gestures by 12 months
πŸ—£οΈ Delayed speech or language
😊 Limited interest in playing or interacting with others
πŸ”„ Repetitive movements (hand flapping, rocking, spinning objects)
πŸ“… Gets very upset with changes in routine
πŸ‘‚ Unusual reactions to sounds, lights, textures, or touch
πŸ“‰ Loses words or social skills they previously had

πŸ’™ Early recognition leads to early support. If you notice several of these signs, talk to your child's pediatrician or a developmental specialist.

W-sitting is when a child sits with their knees bent and feet out to the sides. It feels stable and comfortable for many toddlers.

⚠️ Too much W-sitting may lead to:

Weak core muscles
Tight hips and legs
Poor balance and coordination
Poor posture

βœ… Occasional W-sitting is normal, but encourage other sitting positions like criss-cross, side-sitting, or long-sitting to help build strength and balance. 😊

🌈 Dealing with Tantrums 🌈

Tantrums happen when children experience big feelings that they do not yet know how to manage. They may cry, scream, kick, or throw things because they are upset, tired, frustrated, or overwhelmed. During a tantrum, stay calm, acknowledge the child's feelings, and offer comfort and support. Use simple words and help them learn calming strategies such as deep breathing or counting. After they have calmed down, talk about what happened and teach better ways to express emotions. With patience, understanding, and guidance, children can learn to manage their feelings and develop healthy emotional skills. πŸ’›πŸ˜Š

✏️ Writing takes time, and that’s okay! Every child learns at their own pace. Small steps, like holding a pencil correctly, tracing lines, or writing a few letters, are important achievements. With practice, patience, and encouragement, these little successes grow into bigger skills. Remember, every word written is progress, and every small step today leads to big accomplishments tomorrow! 🌟
