Breastfeeding remains the gold standard and cornerstone of an optimal maternal and child nutrition through infant and young child feeding key interventions to ensure that every Filipino child receives the best possible start in life. Beyond health, breastfeeding strengthens food security, reduces household expenses, minimizes environmental waste from breastmilk substitutes, and supports poverty reduction by providing a safe, sustainable, and readily available source of nutrition.
The recent data on the 2025 National Nutrition Survey revealed that most breastfeeding practices improved but remained suboptimal. The percentage of infants and young children 0-23 months old with timely breastfeeding initiation decreased from 61.2% in 2023 to 59.4% in 2025. Also, only 54.8% of Filipino infants below six months are exclusively breastfed. In addition to this, 61.0% and 48.5% of infants and young children have continued breastfeeding until one year and two years of age, respectively, highlighting the need for stronger support systems for breastfeeding mothers and families.
In recognition of these challenges, the National Nutrition Council (NNC), through the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2023โ2028, remains steadfast in underscoring breastfeeding as a priority intervention to achieve the national target of increasing the percentage of exclusively breastfed (EBF) infants at 6 months from 32.1% (2021-2022) to 50% by 2028.
As the government's lead policy-making and coordinating body on nutrition, the NNC, together with the Regional Office of CALABARZON, continues to advance breastfeeding promotion across the region through the implementation of evidence-based nutrition programs and technical assistance to local government units
Breastfeeding is more than a mother's responsibilityโit is a shared commitment to ensuring healthier children, stronger families, and more resilient communities. NNC CALABARZON calls upon every Filipino to become a breastfeeding advocate.
Let us all envision a Philippines where every mother is empowered, every child is nourished, and every community advocates for a more sustainable future for future generations.
