🦠 Parent Tips: Amoebiasis in Infants
What causes amoebiasis?
Amoebiasis is caused by a parasite called Entamoeba histolytica. Infants usually get infected by swallowing food or water contaminated with stool (fecal-oral transmission). This can happen through:
* Poor hand hygiene of caregivers
* Contaminated drinking water or formula
* Unwashed fruits and vegetables
* Dirty feeding bottles, utensils, or toys
How can you help prevent it?
✅ Wash hands thoroughly before preparing food and after diaper changes.
✅ Use clean, safe drinking water for formula and food preparation.
✅ Wash fruits and vegetables well before serving.
✅ Sterilize bottles and feeding utensils properly.
✅ Keep your baby’s play area and toys clean.
When should you see a doctor?
Seek medical care if your baby has persistent diarrhea, blood or mucus in the stool, fever, vomiting, signs of dehydration (dry mouth, fewer wet diapers, sunken eyes), or becomes unusually sleepy.
Remember: Breastfeeding, when possible, provides added protection against many intestinal infections.
