In line with the World Voice Day 2026, our Spero Physios attended a seminar regarding the multidisciplinary approach in assessing and treating Dysphagia.
Dysphagia is the medical term for swallowing difficulties, ranging from discomfort to complete inability to swallow liquids or solids. (Mayo Clinic, 2024)
This is a very common complication in patient's with Stroke, Parkinson's Disease, and etc. Depending on the patient's age (infants to older adults) and presentation of symptoms, the screening should be properly performed to devise an individualized management and eventually referral to another specialist if warranted.
The rehabilitation team namely the Physiatrists, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists work hand in hand to teach patients specific oral exercises and swallowing techniques therefore improving the patient's function and quality of life. 🗣
