Four years ago, the Dobbs v. Jackson Womenโ€™s Health Organization decision took away federal protections for abortion care, allowing states to restrict access to abortion and leaving people with far fewer options for reproductive health care. Crisis pregnancy centers, or CPCs, are taking advantage of the gaps in care created by Dobbs to expand their reach, creating barriers to essential health care and taking tax dollars away from legitimate health care programs and health care professionals.

CPCs present themselves as legitimate health care clinics, but their goal is to prevent people from getting vital reproductive health care, especially abortion. They cause delays in care, spread medical misinformation, and target vulnerable populationsโ€”and their numbers have been surging nationwide since the Dobbs decision.

ACOG remains committed to improving and defending access to safe, evidence-based, essential reproductive health care. To learn more about CPCs and how to identify them, visit: https://bit.ly/4xSNxCC

Breastmilk is a dynamic, living fluid and the perfect nutrition for infants, tailored to meet the changing developmental needs from birth through toddlerhood. It is packed with essential antibodies, macronutrients, and enzymes that boost immunity, support digestion, and protect against illness. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods for 2 or more years. It also offers significant health benefits for mothers, including faster uterine recovery, reduced postpartum bleeding, and lower long-term risk of breast and ovarian cancers, type II diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Some mothers have been ashamed of breastfeeding their infants, especially in public areas. We should bear in mind that the essence of being a woman is to conceive a child; this is linked to the responsibility of nurturing the newborn. Nourishing the infant through breastfeeding is a privilege that God gave to women. We should be honored to fulfill this act that man has denied.

Breastfeeding is hard work! To be successful, most parents need a strong support system. This is where the community comes into play; it should advocate breastfeeding by promoting, protecting, and supporting it. Support is done by sharing resources (lactation consultants, support groups, and professional programs), workplace advocacy (federal laws about breaktimes and spaces for expressing milk), creating public support (lactation rooms in public spaces), peer mentoring (from experienced mothers), and public and systems change (10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding).

Lastly, in this time of global crisis, breastfeeding is one of the best solutions for curtailing costs with maximum benefits, as it results in a happy, healthy mother and baby.
