People, Planet, Profit: The MMCI ESG Strategy
We have already said, last month, on Earth Day, that there are no healthy individuals on a degraded planet. Some may not be obviously sick, but there could be mental anguish, suffering dignity, spiritual weakness in others. That is because we live in one planet, with common resources to share. Thus, for our corporate social responsibility we take PPP (people, planet, profit) as our ESG (environmental social governance) framework.
Our institutional development after the pandemic of 2020 to 2022, went like this: in 2022 we worked on recovering our health; in 2023 we worked on our Financial Health just for institutional viability; in 2024, we worked on our systems health for operational sustainability; in 2025, we started working on workforce health; this year, 2026, we are working on our workplace heath, and hopefully in 2027, we can work on corporate health as a whole with PPP as ESG. We adopted this strategy because we believe โHealthcare begins with people: our patients, our workforce, and the communities we serveโ but we also need our system to work to sustain us and the planet we call home.
We are not perfect, nor would we likely be, but we can dream and work on that dream.
However, we cannot just dream for ourselves. That is why our unified PPP focus is important. It wraps up all our concerns as a healthcare facility. We should all stand by the belief that the success of MMCI is not measured by financial performance alone, but by how it cares for people, patients and workers alike; how it protects the environment; and how it sustains ethical and responsible growth. As much as possible, for example, our goal every day is we should have no casualty in our hands, yet we should remain accessible and affordable to all. So, we do the best we can. But before we can do the best, we should be able to achieve the best of ourselves.
Thus, our workplace should be safe, healthy and fair so we can deliver quality, compassionate care, in a safe and just environment, at the same time we prevent mental health and burnout for ourselves and grow in a manner healthy for all. All persons must feel that. This should be our internal balance for People.
The we go Planet. So, we go waste conscious: not use more than is needed. We go green. Do not allow water to flow unnecessarily, segregate solid waste, proper wastewater management, limit carbon dioxide production (no burning, planting trees and nurturing them), limit electricity consumption. At the same time we contribute to community health with our partnerships with the barangays, our outreach programs with YAKAP and GAMOT, and our conscious promotion of health habits like hand washing; all because a healing institution that must also avoid contributing to environmental harm.
Then we go Profit because all that should redound to good business practices for sustainability because institutional sustainability allows continued service to people and community. This is where risk reduction and management come in; also leadership and governance, integrity and accountability, and personal and institutional resilience, even ethical procurement and investments on people, like our scholarship programs, and on healthcare systems.
All these will shape MMCI as we go forward.
