Event Highlights | National Physiatry Day & 48th National Disability Rights Week
July 22, 2026

In celebration of National Physiatry Day and the 48th National Disability Rights Week, the Zamboanga City Medical Center Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, in partnership with the Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (PARM) and Unilab Pharma, conducted the “Scoliosis Clinic: Prevention and Early Detection of Scoliosis” at Tugbungan Elementary School, Putik Elementary School, and Sinunuc Elementary School.

The activity included a lay forum for teachers on scoliosis awareness, early recognition, and timely referral, followed by scoliosis screening for Grade 3 to Grade 5 pupils. Through school-based screening, we aim to identify children who may benefit from early evaluation and intervention.

Not everyone with scoliosis has a disability. Many individuals with mild scoliosis lead active, healthy lives without significant limitations. Our goal is to raise awareness, promote early detection, and ensure timely access to appropriate care.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our partner schools, volunteers, PARM, Unilab Pharma, and everyone who helped make this initiative possible.

Our department was honored to host this multidisciplinary seminar focused on empowering parents and caregivers of children with special needs last 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟒, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, at Kcc Mall De Zamboanga🧩✨

The event featured the 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 necessary for holistic care and family-centered care:
🩺𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫: Dr. Vida shared insights about the medical diagnosis.
🤸🏻‍♀️𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫: OT Katrina explored the pyramid of learning, integrating the clinical concepts into home strategies.
🗣️𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫: SLP Donnabelle provided practical ways for building communication at home.
🏫𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫: SLP/Teacher Edsh navigated the complexities of school placement, transitions, and support.
