The ZCMC Safety and Environment Unit is once again conducting the 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥-𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭 to assess and strengthen health care waste management practices across all departments.

Anchored on the 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉'𝒔 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂𝒍 (4𝒕𝒉 𝑬𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏) and utilizing the modified 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎 𝑺𝒆𝒍𝒇-𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒉𝒆𝒆𝒕, this annual audit evaluates each department's compliance with established standards while promoting safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible waste management.

🚨 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐓 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘 𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐓 | ZCMCOMMUNITY

Zamboanga’s heat index is rising, with forecasts reaching 𝟑𝟑°𝐂 (𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧). At these levels, prolonged exposure can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke, especially with long duty hours, ward rounds, and movement across hospital areas.

This is a shared risk for all of us, most especially:
• Staff on extended shifts
• Personnel working outdoors (security, transport, maintenance)
• Patients with comorbidities, including elderly and pediatric cases

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 – Drink water regularly. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 – Wear light, breathable clothing when possible.
𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬 – Rest in shaded or well-ventilated areas.
𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 – Avoid prolonged outdoor activity from 10 AM–4 PM; use covered walkways.
𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 – Dizziness, headache, cramps, nausea, rapid pulse. Act early: rest, rehydrate, and cool down.
𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 – Check on colleagues and monitor high-risk patients closely.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If there is confusion, loss of consciousness, or absence of sweating—seek immediate medical attention.

Let us remain vigilant and proactive. Heat illness is preventable—awareness is protection.

Through conversations on environmental management systems, quality improvement, organizational processes, and institutional experiences, the activity reinforced an important principle: improvement happens not only within our walls, but also when we open those walls to collaboration.

Benchmarking is not simply about looking at what others do. It is about recognizing shared challenges, exchanging perspectives, adapting meaningful practices, and finding opportunities to grow together.

July brought safety and sustainability to the dining table through The Hospital Healthy Plate Challenge.

The initiative encouraged the hospital community to make healthier and more mindful food choices, demonstrating that healthy people, healthy plates, and a healthy planet can grow together.

Held on 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟓–𝟖, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 at the 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐊𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐁𝐂𝐂𝐊), , 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐤, 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚, 𝐀𝐂𝐎𝐇 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 brought together occupational health professionals and experts across the region under the theme, “𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎 𝑆𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝐹𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒: 𝐺𝑙𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑙 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑛 𝑂𝑐𝑐𝑢𝑝𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐻𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ.”

Representing Zamboanga City Medical Center and the Philippines, Dr. Esturco took the international stage as an Oral Presenter, showcasing the study:

The ZCMC Safety and Environment Unit is once again conducting the 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥-𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭 to assess and strengthen health care waste management practices across all departments.

Anchored on the 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉'𝒔 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂𝒍 (4𝒕𝒉 𝑬𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏) and utilizing the modified 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎 𝑺𝒆𝒍𝒇-𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒉𝒆𝒆𝒕, this annual audit evaluates each department's compliance with established standards while promoting safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible waste management.
