Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research & Development ZCHRD is an organization created to optimize the use of research to help alleviate the health and nut

Vision:
A progressive, dynamic and responsible health research community committed toward the attainment of local, national, and global health goals. Goals:
1) Increase the number of generated research proposals endorsed for funding;
2) Facilitate research outputs for product development;
3) All member institutions will have accredited ERCs within 5 years;
4) Institutions in the provinces will be

represented in ZCHRD in 5 years. It also plans to 5) Strengthen the commitment of the institutional heads;
6) Capacitate researchers through appropriate intervention (mentoring, training);
7) Establish a mechanism for recognition system for researchers;
8) To endorse research articles to peer reviewed and/or accredited journals;
9) To facilitate translation of research output into policies;
10) To disseminate research output (conferences, forums, etc.).
11) To expand the sources of funding; and
12) To facilitate the sharing of resources (human and infrastructure) among member institutions and other consortia.

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office IX (DOST IX) and Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) formally sealed their partnership through a Ceremonial Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing held earlier today at the Office of the President, Western Mindanao State University, for the implementation of two research projects funded under the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) Regional Research Funds (RRF).

The approved research projects are:

📌 "Maternal and Childcare Glossary in Various Local Languages of Zamboanga Peninsula"
Project Leader: Ms. Juvie B. Toribio
Grant Amount: Php 999,699.25

📌 "Teenage Pregnancy: Risks and Realities"
Project Leader: Mr. Hashim N. Alawi, Jr.
Grant Amount: Php 999,965.00

Leading the ceremonial signing were DOST IX Regional Director and ZCHRD Consortium Chair, Ms. Rosemarie S. Salazar, and the University President of WMSU, Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, reaffirming both institutions' shared commitment to advancing health research that addresses regional priorities and generates evidence-based solutions for the people of the Zamboanga Peninsula.

22 June 2026| The Department of Science and Technology IX - Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) successfully conducted the Orientation Meeting: Call for R&D Proposals at Jade Hall, Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.

The activity was graced by Ms. Rosemarie S. Salazar, Consortium Chair of ZCHRD and Regional Director of DOST IX, who delivered the Welcome Message and highlighted the importance of advancing health research and development initiatives in the region.

Representatives from various institutions participated in the meeting, including Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Universidad de Zamboanga, Labuan General Hospital, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST), Brent Hospital and Colleges Inc., Western Mindanao State University, Ciudad Medical Zamboanga, Zamboanga City Medical Center, ADMAMED, and Katilingban sa Kalambuan Org. Inc. Participants from Sulu State University and Margosatubig General Hospital also joined via Zoom.

The orientation featured informative presentations on:
• ZCHRD Funding Opportunities and Priority Research Areas by Joezerk Jhon P. Biel, PhD, Member, Research Management Committee;
• DOST IX Grants-in-Aid Funding Opportunities by Judilyn E. Alvarez, Science Research Specialist I, DOST IX; and
• DOST Technology Transfer Process by Jun Carlo B. Tangon, Project Technical Assistant IV, DOST IX.

Through this initiative, ZCHRD continues to encourage researchers, institutions, and stakeholders to develop relevant and impactful research proposals that address priority health concerns and contribute to evidence-based policies and innovations in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
