Moving forward with a renewed commitment to community health and primary care, the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) Residents Organization Zamboanga City Chapter successfully held its Chapter Induction of Officers, New Members, and Fellowship Night on June 20, 2026. The event was well-attended by dedicated family medicine doctors, medical pioneers, and incoming leaders for an evening of celebration, camaraderie, and professional dedication.

The evening was a testament to the chapter's strong foundation, which has been built over the years through the guidance of veteran leaders. Among those anchoring the local medical community are ZPMC DFCM Chairman Dr. Joseph S. Llenado, who previously served as the PAFP ZC Chapter President, and ZPMC DFCM Training Officer Dr. Christine Marie Gapoy-Yu, who is a current PAFP ZC Chapter Board of Director. Their enduring commitment to family medicine continues to serve as an inspiration to both the incoming leadership and the newly inducted members. The event was also graced by the current PAFP National President Dr. Limuel Anthony Abrogena.

As the chapter embraces new challenges in healthcare, a fresh roster of leaders has stepped up to guide the organization. This year, Dr. Joshua Manahan and Dr. Suychelle Valmoria-Halipa were among the chosen few elected as the new Chapter Representatives, taking on the vital responsibility to champion primary care initiatives in the region. The evening concluded with a vibrant fellowship night, fostering deeper bonds among the city's family medicine doctors as they pledge to continue delivering compassionate, comprehensive, and continuous care to the families of Zamboanga.

As technology changes the way we look at healthcare, one thing remains entirely irreplaceable: the human connection.

This World Family Doctor Day, we are proud to celebrate the incredible family physicians at ZPMC and around the world. From leveraging advanced digital health tools to streamline your care, to taking the time to truly listen to your concerns, our doctors prove that modern medicine is nothing without a personal touch.

Algorithms can read data, but they can’t replace the trust, empathy, and continuity of care that your family doctor brings to every visit. Thank you to our dedicated primary care teams for ensuring that no matter how digital the world becomes, our patient care always remains profoundly human. ❤️

The global stage of family medicine gathered in the "Heart of the Philippines" this week as the WONCA Asia Pacific Regional Conference 2026 took over the Iloilo Convention Center from March 25–27.

The prestigious event, held in conjunction with the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) 65th Anniversary and Annual Convention, brought together hundreds of family physicians from across the globe to discuss the evolving landscape of primary care.

Among the standout contributors were two residents from the ZPMCI Department of Family and Community Medicine, whose research and clinical insights were selected for presentation before the international delegation. Their work highlighted the diverse and complex challenges faced by modern family physicians:

Dr. Suychelle Valmoria-Halipa presented a timely and evocative paper titled, "Behind the Screens: A Case Report on Gaming Disorder." Her work delved into the psychological and social intricacies of digital addiction, a growing concern in the post-pandemic era.

Dr. Joshua B. Manahan shared a compelling clinical study titled, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stone: A rare case of Cholecystolithiasis in a 6-year-old boy - Its Implications for Strengthening Health Systems." Dr. Manahan’s presentation emphasized the need for vigilant pediatric care and the systemic improvements required to manage rare presentations at the primary level.

The success of these residents was bolstered by the unwavering support of the ZPMCI Department of Family and Community Medicine leadership. The Department Chair, Training Officer, and the dedicated consultants were instrumental in providing the guidance, academic rigor, and encouragement necessary for the residents to excel on such a competitive international platform.

This mentorship reflects the department's commitment to producing world-class family physicians who are as adept at clinical research as they are at community service.

We are thrilled to share a historic milestone in our journey toward medical excellence as the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) of the Zamboanga Peninsula Medical Center, Inc. (ZPMCI) and the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) successfully held their first-ever joint lecture. This landmark collaboration, held on February 3, 2026, at Isabelle's Cafe & Venue in Tumaga, Zamboanga City, marks a significant step forward in bridging the expertise of two of the city's leading medical institutions to elevate the standard of training and community healthcare in the region.

The session featured the esteemed Dr. Carol Encarnacion, who served as the resource speaker for the timely and essential topic, "What’s New in Infectious Diseases." Dr. Encarnacion provided a comprehensive and insightful look into the latest advancements and evolving trends in the field, equipping our doctors with vital knowledge to stay at the forefront of patient care and public health safety in an ever-changing health landscape.

The event was graced by the leadership of both hospitals, highlighting a shared commitment to professional growth and academic excellence. In attendance were Department Chairs Dr. Joseph Llenado of ZPMCI and Dr. Fred Iturralde of ZCMC, alongside Training Officers Dr. Christine Yu of ZPMCI and Dra. Nurijam Espares of ZCMC. Their presence underscored the importance of this partnership in fostering an environment of shared learning and camaraderie among the resident doctors and consultants of both departments.

This collaboration is more than just a lecture; it is the beginning of a strengthened alliance aimed at providing the best family-focused and community-oriented healthcare. By uniting the strengths of ZPMCI and ZCMC, we are better prepared to serve the families of the Zamboanga Peninsula with excellence and compassion. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to pursue our mission of excellence in medical education and regional health leadership.
