A 21-year-old with an aggressive blood cancer that had come back twice is now in complete remission. Pakistan has performed its first ever CAR T-cell therapy, one of the most advanced cancer treatments on the planet.
The procedure was carried out at the Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Centre in Rawalpindi, by specialists from the Army Medical Corps, after years of research. CAR T-cell therapy works by taking a patient's own immune cells, reprogramming them to hunt cancer, and putting them back in.
Here is the detail that matters most. The CAR T-cells were prepared indigenously, inside Pakistan, not imported. The patient had relapsed B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, received the therapy on June 18, and was in cancer-free remission within two weeks.
Let this one land without the usual cynicism. A country that struggles to keep the lights on and staff its hospitals just delivered a therapy much of the world still cannot offer. When Pakistani scientists are given the tools, they compete at the absolute frontier of medicine. Imagine what they would do with real, sustained investment.
One young man walked out cancer-free, and the country walked into an elite club. Remember this the next time someone tells you nothing good happens here.
