*Learning Disability (LD)* is a neurological condition that affects how the brain processes, stores, and uses information.
*Key point*: It has _nothing_ to do with intelligence. Kids with LD often have average or above-average IQ — unka brain bas kuch specific skills ko alag tarike se process karta hai.
*Core Features of LD*
1. *Unexpected difficulty*: Child is smart, but struggles badly in 1-2 academic areas despite good teaching
2. *Brain-based*: It's neurological, not due to laziness, poor vision/hearing, or emotional issues
3. *Lifelong*: Doesn’t go away, but with the right strategies students can succeed
4. *Specific areas*: Affects reading, writing, math, or language — not _all_ learning
*Most Common Types*
Type Also called What it affects
**Dyslexia** Reading disability Reading fluency, decoding words, spelling. Letters might flip: b/d, p/q
**Dysgraphia** Writing disability Handwriting, spacing, spelling, organizing thoughts on paper
**Dyscalculia** Math disability Number sense, math facts, telling time, money concepts
**Auditory Processing Disorder** APD Understanding spoken language, following verbal instructions
**Language Processing Disorder** LPD Expressing thoughts verbally, understanding what others say
**Non-Verbal LD** NVLD Social cues, visual-spatial skills, math, motor coordination
*What LD is NOT*
- ❌ Low IQ or intellectual disability
- ❌ Autism, ADHD — though these can occur _with_ LD
- ❌ Caused by poor teaching, poverty, or not trying hard enough
- ❌ Just “being bad at math/reading” — the gap is much larger than expected
*Signs to Watch For*
- Reading very slow, guessing words, hating to read aloud
- Messy handwriting, can’t copy from board, avoids writing
- Can’t memorize multiplication tables despite practice
- Trouble following 2-3 step directions
- Strong in other areas — great at art, sports, storytelling, but fails tests
*How It’s Diagnosed*
School psychologist does psychoeducational testing. They look for:
1. Average IQ
2. Significant weakness in reading/writing/math
3. Gap between ability and achievement
In the US, this qualifies kids for an *IEP* under “Specific Learning Disability.” In Pakistan/UK, similar support plans exist.
*Bottom line*: Learning disability = “wiring difference” in the brain for certain skills. With accommodations like extra time, audiobooks, or calculators, students can thrive.
