In ancient times, before the invention of refrigerators, people had to get creative to preserve perishable items like milk.
One fascinating method used by Russian and Finnish communities involved placing brown frogs, specifically Rana temporaria, into milk.
This might sound strange, but modern science has found some truth to this practice. A study conducted in 2012 revealed that secretions from these frogs contain peptides with antibacterial properties. These peptides, including Brevinin-1Tb, can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, helping to keep the milk fresh for longer periods.
While this method might seem odd today, it was an ingenious solution for its time. However, it's important to note that this method isn't recommended for modern use.
Instead, we can appreciate the resourcefulness of our ancestors and the fascinating ways they found to solve everyday problems.
