Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA)

Essential fatty acids play a critical role in cardiovascular health, neurological function, and inflammatory regulation. Here is a concise reference for clinical practice:

Recommended Daily Intake (EPA + DHA):
• General adults: 250–500 mg/day
• Cardiac patients (secondary prevention): 1,000 mg/day
• Hypertriglyceridemia: 2,000–4,000 mg/day (under supervision)
• Pregnancy & lactation: 200–300 mg DHA/day

Key Dietary Sources:
Animal (EPA & DHA): Salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna
Plant (ALA): Flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts—note: ALA conversion to EPA/DHA is limited (5–10%)

Supplementation Considerations:
Fish oil capsules or algal oil (vegan-friendly) are appropriate for patients with low fish intake, cardiovascular risk, or during pregnancy.

Clinical Benefits Supported by Evidence:
Reduction of triglycerides
Anti-inflammatory effects (relevant in rheumatoid arthritis)
Support for cognitive function and mental health (depression, anxiety)
Potential cardiovascular risk reduction

Important Precautions:
High-dose supplementation may increase bleeding risk; exercise caution in patients on anticoagulant therapy. Always individualize dosing.

Practice Principle:
Prioritize dietary sources first. Encourage 2 servings of oily fish per week before recommending supplementation.
