The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination (MoNHSR&C), in collaboration with the National Institute of Health, launched the Pakistan Wastewater Environmental Surveillance (WES) Strategy and the National WES Genomics Dashboard, a major step toward strengthening disease surveillance and outbreak preparedness in the country. The launch was inaugurated by the Honourable Federal Minister for Health, Syed Mustafa Kamal, who emphasized the importance of wastewater surveillance as an early warning tool for timely outbreak detection and evidence-based public health action. Dr. Muhammad Salman, CEO NIH, highlighted that the WES system will enhance Pakistan’s capacity to monitor priority pathogens and support a coordinated One Health approach. NIH team presented the progress including three consultative national workshops, two capacity building hands-on laboratory trainings, prioritization of 33 pathogens for WES, development of metagenomic data analysis pipelines, identification of sampling sites for wastewater testing, ongoing pilot WES data generation in Punjab and Sindh using 16S metagenomics and TaqMan array-based assays, development of a national wastewater genomic surveillance cost estimation tool, and stakeholder engagement to translate WES data into public health action.
The initiative demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening public health preparedness in collaboration with government institutions, Duke-NUS Centre for Outbreak Preparedness, Aga Khan University, academia, and national partners to establish sustainable wastewater-based surveillance systems.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Sindh Health Department, successfully conducted the final contact session for the 26th Frontline FETP Cohort in Karachi from July 20 to 23, 2026. This milestone marked the end of a three-session learning journey that was enriching for 33 dedicated public health professionals preparing for graduation.
The program strengthened participants' practical expertise in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, applied epidemiology, risk communication, and multisectoral collaboration—all grounded in a One Health framework. By linking human, animal, and environmental health, these graduates are now better equipped to prevent, detect, and respond to emerging health threats. The final session highlighted key achievements, shared lessons learned, and celebrated the professional network.

The Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response System (IDSRS) project, National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, successfully conducted a two-day capacity-building training for Healthcare Providers of the Federal General Hospital, Park Road, Islamabad. The training aimed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in public health surveillance and disease reporting.
During the two-day session, participants received comprehensive training on the importance of public health surveillance, the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response System (IDSRS), notifiable disease case definitions, disease reporting mechanisms, disease alert generation and response, laboratory surveillance tools, and the Public Health Laboratory Network. The training emphasized the critical role of timely and accurate disease reporting in strengthening Pakistan's public health surveillance system and improving preparedness and response to public health emergencies.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Muhammad Ali Rehman, Project Director, IDSRS NIH, highlighted that the IDSRS plays a pivotal role in supporting hospitals to reduce the burden of communicable diseases through timely detection, reporting, and response. He emphasized that healthcare providers are the backbone of the surveillance system, and their commitment to reporting accurate and timely data into the IDSRS is essential for enabling evidence-based public health interventions and protecting communities from disease outbreaks.
The closing ceremony was graced by Dr. Mazhar Nisar, Joint Executive Director, and Dr. Mumtaz Ali Khan, Chief, Centre for Disease Control (CDC), NIH, as the chief guests. They distributed certificates among the participants and commended the National IDSRS team for organizing this important capacity-building initiative.
