It can occur due to eye trauma, uveitis, glaucoma, retinal disease, hypertension, blood-clotting disorders, or systemic disease. The eye may appear red or partially filled with blood, and the dog may show pain, squinting, or reduced vision. Hyphema is a clinical sign rather than a diagnosis, so identifying the underlying cause is essential. A complete ophthalmic examination, including intraocular pressure measurement and appropriate systemic investigations, may be required. Early veterinary treatment is important to protect vision and manage the underlying disease.
