🩸 ANEMIA MANAGEMENT IN CKD & DIALYSIS PATIENTS
Anemia is a common complication of CKD and dialysis and can cause fatigue, weakness, breathlessness and reduced quality of life.
At Islamabad Dialysis and NephroCare Centre (IDNC), anemia management is individualized and includes:
✅ Regular Hb and iron monitoring
✅ Correction of iron deficiency
✅ Oral or IV iron when indicated
✅ ESAs when appropriate
✅ Evaluation of inflammation, blood loss and other causes of anemia
✅ Selected use of HIF-PHIs when appropriate
💊 What about HIF-PHIs?
HIF-PHIs are newer oral treatments for CKD-related anemia. Certain HIF-PHIs have FDA-approved indications for adults with CKD-related anemia who are on dialysis.
However, according to the KDIGO 2026 Anemia in CKD Guideline, ESAs remain preferred over HIF-PHIs as first-line treatment after correctable causes of anemia have been addressed.
HIF-PHIs may be considered in selected patients based on clinical circumstances, treatment preferences and risk–benefit assessment.
