A swallowed bone can become lodged inside a catβs intestine, causing a dangerous gastrointestinal obstruction. Affected cats may develop repeated vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, lethargy, dehydration, and inability to pass normal stool. If the bone cannot pass naturally or is causing complete obstruction, emergency intestinal surgery (enterotomy) may be required to remove it. Delayed treatment can lead to intestinal perforation, tissue necrosis, peritonitis, and life-threatening sepsis. Early diagnosis with X-rays and/or ultrasound can significantly improve the outcome.
