🏙️ Cities are growing, and nature is running out of room.

In Pakistan, rapid urban expansion is putting pressure on green spaces, wetlands and natural habitats, leaving less space for native plants, birds, pollinators and other species. Pakistan's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2026–2030 recognizes that biodiversity must be part of how cities are planned, including through green and blue spaces and the use of native species.

With support from the Global Environment Facility through the The Biodiversity Finance Initiative - BIOFIN, is helping strengthen biodiversity planning and financing for a more resilient, nature-positive Pakistan. This , let's build cities with room for both people and nature. 🌱

Mixed waste is lost value. 🚮

When recyclables are thrown out with everything else, they become contaminated and valuable recovery opportunities are lost. In Hyderabad, Pakistan 🇵🇰, 3-bin systems are now in place across 50 schools, colleges, universities, restaurants and marquee venues, helping communities improve source segregation. Segregated materials are strengthening recovery by informal waste workers and are now channelled into Altas Pak's formal recycling value chain. 🔄 This work is part of the Global Plastic Action Partnership's National Plastic Action Partnership Pakistan, led by .

Better separation at source. Better recovery downstream. A stronger step towards a circular economy. ♻️💚

In Balochistan’s District Lasbela, where communities face water scarcity, people are taking a bigger role in decisions about the water they depend on.

Through ’s Climate Resilience Programme, eight Village Water Councils have been established across villages along the Porali River Basin, in partnership with the Water, Environment and Sanitation Society and with support from the Global Water Challenge. The councils bring together 125 community members, including 66 women, to identify local priorities and help shape how shared water resources are managed. 🤝

It’s a step towards more inclusive, community-led , where local voices help shape decisions that affect water and livelihoods. 🌱

The latest HIES data shows that food and housing are consuming an increasingly larger share of household budgets, while education's share has declined significantly. Behind these numbers are difficult household decisions about what can be afforded today, and what may have to wait until tomorrow. Taraqqi Unpacked explores how changing spending patterns are reshaping household welfare across Pakistan.
