🩵 Dysphagia Awareness Month Reflection
As Speech-Language Pathologists, our role extends far beyond speech and language. One of the most important yet often overlooked areas of our expertise is the assessment and management of swallowing disorders (dysphagia).
In my work within the public healthcare sector, I frequently encounter patients whose swallowing difficulties go unrecognized or are referred late. Symptoms such as coughing during meals, recurrent chest infections, choking episodes, wet voice quality, unexplained weight loss, and nasal regurgitation should never be ignored.
Dysphagia is more than a swallowing problem. It can affect nutrition, hydration, respiratory health, social participation, and overall quality of life. Early identification and timely intervention can significantly reduce complications and improve outcomes.
Throughout Dysphagia Awareness Month, I will be sharing insights from my clinical experience, discussing commonly overlooked signs of dysphagia, and highlighting the vital role of Speech-Language Pathologists in swallowing assessment and rehabilitation.
Awareness leads to timely action. Timely action leads to better outcomes.
