The doctor highlights three major factors that can contribute to obstructive sleep apnea:
Anatomy of the nose and throat.

Conditions that further narrow that space, such as nasal allergies, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, polyps or other obstruction.

Excess weight, which can further affect the space available for airflow.

Think of the airway like a garden hose.

As the passage becomes narrower, airflow becomes more difficult and the sound may become louder. If the passage closes almost completely, the snoring can suddenly stop because very little or no air is moving.

After several seconds, the body briefly wakes, the person takes a breath and oxygen begins to recover.

That gasp may be the recovery from an apnoea episode.

If you regularly hear your partner snoring loudly, pausing their breathing or gasping during sleep, tell them what you are seeing and hearing.

Snoring is not only a noise that affects the person beside them.

The doctor explains that repeated airway obstruction may result in interrupted sleep, drops in oxygen and increased physiological stress, including changes in blood pressure and blood sugar.

Some people say they do not snore but report that they have always breathed through their mouth during sleep.

The doctor explains that normal sleep breathing is designed to occur through the nose. Mouth breathing requires the jaw to remain positioned in a way that may interfere with deeper sleep.

If you consistently sleep with your mouth open, it is worth mentioning when discussing the quality of your sleep.

What you dream about can be influenced by your mental state and by what was occupying your mind during the day or just before sleep.

Anxiety may appear in dreams as missing a flight, being unable to arrive somewhere on time, falling, being abandoned, or facing a problem you cannot seem to solve.

Recurring dream themes can sometimes mirror the worries or unresolved situations your mind was already processing while awake.

What you dream about can be influenced by your mental state and by what was occupying your mind during the day or just before sleep.

Anxiety may appear in dreams as missing a flight, being late, falling, being abandoned, or repeatedly facing a problem you cannot resolve. Recurring dreams can sometimes reflect the same unresolved worry showing up in different situations.

Pay attention to what was on your mind before bed when the same type of dream keeps returning.

Many mothers describe the same experience. Even after their child begins sleeping through the night, they still wake easily or struggle to settle back to sleep.

During early motherhood, the brain adapts to stay alert. It becomes more responsive to sounds and more prepared to react if a child needs comfort or help. This is a normal, protective response.

For some women, that heightened state of vigilance continues beyond the newborn stage. The brain remains ready to respond, making it harder to fully switch into the deep, restorative sleep that supports recovery and wellbeing.

If sleep difficulties begin after having a child and continue long after nighttime caregiving has ended, it may be more than a temporary adjustment. Understanding why the brain remains on alert is an important step toward treating insomnia effectively.

Sleep medicine is about more than getting a better night’s sleep.

Many sleep problems can be treated without surgery, and in many cases, treatment is focused on addressing the underlying cause rather than simply managing the symptoms.

When sleep improves, people can see a real difference in how they feel and function day to day. For some, the changes can also have a longer-term impact on their quality of life.

If sleep problems are affecting your daily life, they deserve proper attention.

A hypopnea is a partial reduction in breathing during sleep. Unlike a complete apnea, airflow does not stop entirely. Some air is still moving in and out, but not enough to maintain normal breathing and oxygenation.

Apneas and hypopneas can both be related to physical obstruction of the airway. The difference is in the degree of airflow restriction.

This distinction is important when evaluating sleep-disordered breathing because a person does not need to have a complete pause in breathing for their sleep to be affected.
