Painting can play a significant role in the therapy of a child with selective mutism. Here's how:

Non-Verbal Expression: Painting provides a non-verbal means of expression for the child, allowing them to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without the pressure of speaking.

Emotional Outlet: Painting can serve as a therapeutic outlet for the child to express emotions they may find difficult to verbalize. Through the use of colors, shapes, and textures, they can convey their innermost feelings and experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

Building Trust: Engaging in painting activities with a therapist can help build trust between the child and the therapist. As the child feels more comfortable expressing themselves through art, they may become more open to verbal communication and interactions with the therapist over time.

Self-Expression and Identity: Painting allows the child to explore their sense of self and identity in a creative way. By creating art, they can develop a sense of agency and empowerment, which can be particularly beneficial for children with selective mutism who may struggle with feelings of helplessness or inadequacy.

Overall, painting can be a valuable tool in the therapy of a child with selective mutism, helping them to express themselves, process emotions, build trust, and develop social skills in a creative and empowering way.

Very often we forget that by taking care and not allowing them to do their own tasks we aren't helping them. Making them able to do their own work independently is what we should work upon.
So, here is a little reminder for us all therapists, parents and caregivers that we should sometimes step a little back and let them do their thing. Let them take care of themselves. ✨

Do you know about sensory play?

In simple words, sensory play is a play that provides opportunities to the children to involve their senses.
Nature has given us all these opportunities that requires sensory involvement during play. Sand and water play, tree climbing and walking on grass all are the examples of sensory play.
