What Is Pityriasis Alba? All white patches and not always vitiligo.
Difference between vitiligo and pityriasis alba.
A Common Cause of White Patches in Children.
Many parents become worried when they notice light or white patches on their child’s skin and often mistake them for Vitiligo.
However, not every white patch is Vitiligo. In many cases, it is Pityriasis Alba, which is a harmless and very common skin condition in children.
🔎 What is Pityriasis Alba?
It is a mild skin condition seen mostly in children where:
- Light-colored or whitish patches appear on the face, arms, and legs
- The skin may look dry and slightly rough
- Sometimes there is mild scaling
- It commonly affects children between 3–12 years of age
📌 Why does it occur?
- Skin dryness (xerosis)
- Sensitive skin or mild eczema tendency
- Sun exposure makes the patches more noticeable
- Sometimes associated with nutritional or calcium deficiency, which can make the patches more prominent
❗ Is it Vitiligo?
No. Pityriasis Alba is different because:
✔ It is temporary and harmless
✔ It does not spread aggressively
✔ Skin color gradually returns to normal
✔ It is not a serious disease
💧 What is the treatment?
The most important treatment is regular moisturizing:
✅ Apply a good baby moisturizer/lotion daily
✅ Avoid excessive dryness of the skin
✅ Use mild, gentle soaps
✅ Maintain a balanced diet
✅ With proper care, these patches gradually resolve on their own
🌼 Parents do not need to panic — this condition improves with time and proper skin care.
