Emotional abuse can be difficult to recognize because there may be no visible injuries.
Sometimes it looks like constant criticism.
Sometimes it sounds like “You’re too sensitive.”
Sometimes it is silent treatment, guilt, humiliation, manipulation, or making you question your own reality.
Over time, you may notice that you are constantly apologizing, doubting yourself, monitoring someone else’s mood, or feeling afraid to express your needs.
As a therapist, I want you to remember:
A healthy relationship can have disagreements without making you feel worthless, powerless, or afraid.
And no, recognizing emotional abuse doesn’t mean you have to make an immediate decision about your relationship. Start by recognizing the pattern, trusting your feelings, setting boundaries, and seeking appropriate support.
❤️ You don’t have to lose yourself to keep a relationship.
