Infection prevention begins with understanding!
For children and adolescents living with Thalassaemia Major, repeated transfusions and ongoing treatment make infection prevention an important part of everyday care. But awareness becomes much more meaningful when children and parents learn together.
At the Psychosocial Wellbeing Center, KITCC, our infection-control awareness sessions bring children, adolescents and caregivers into the same conversation, building practical understanding around hygiene, handwashing, safe practices during treatment, and recognizing their own role in reducing preventable risks.
This is also part of integrated psychosocial care. We are not only giving families information; we are helping them develop the confidence and capacity to participate in their own care. When a child lives with a chronic condition, health literacy, caregiver engagement and age-appropriate learning need to become part of the care environment.
This is the approach we continue to strengthen through our Integrated Developmental Psychosocial Care Continuum (IDPCC), using the time children and families already spend within the treatment setting as an opportunity for learning, development and empowerment.
