🌿 What is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is a nerve compression condition where the tibial nerve (or its branches) is compressed inside the tarsal tunnel, a narrow space on the inside of the ankle.

The tibial nerve controls:

Sensation in the bottom of the foot and toes

Some small muscles in the foot

🌿 Causes

Anatomical compression → thickened ligaments, varicose veins, ganglion cysts, or bone spurs

Overuse injuries → running, long walks, or standing for long periods

Medical conditions → diabetes, arthritis, or inflammation

Trauma → ankle fractures, sprains, or swelling

🌿 Symptoms

Tingling or “pins and needles” in the sole, heel, or toes

Burning or shooting pain in the foot or ankle

Numbness in the foot, especially at night

Weakness in toe muscles or difficulty gripping with toes

Swelling or tenderness along the inside of the ankle

🌿 Diagnosis

Physical exam → tapping over tibial nerve to reproduce symptoms (Tinel’s sign)

Nerve conduction studies / EMG → assess nerve function

Imaging → MRI or ultrasound to see compressive structures

🌿 Treatment
1️⃣ Conservative / Home Care

Rest & reduce pressure on the affected foot

Ice or anti-inflammatory medication for swelling

Supportive footwear / orthotics → reduce pressure on the tarsal tunnel

Stretching & nerve gliding exercises → ankle, calf, and foot muscles

2️⃣ Medical / Interventions

Corticosteroid injections → reduce inflammation

Surgery → tarsal tunnel release if conservative measures fail

3️⃣ Lifestyle & Prevention

Avoid prolonged standing or high-impact activities

Maintain healthy weight to reduce nerve compression

Correct foot mechanics with insoles if flat feet or pronation exist

🌿 Acupressure / Nerve Support (Complementary)

KD3 (Taixi) – near inner ankle, supports tibial nerve flow

BL60 (Kunlun) – behind ankle bone, releases tension

ST41 / SP5 – points along ankle and foot meridians

Gentle massage or tapping along inner ankle and sole of foot improves circulation and relieves nerve irritation

💡 Tip: Combine acupressure, gentle stretching, and strengthening of foot muscles for best results.

Your 12 cranial nerves each have a specific function. Experts categorize the cranial nerves based on number and function:

Olfactory nerve: Sense of smell.
Optic nerve: Ability to see.
Oculomotor nerve: Ability to move and blink your eyes.
Trochlear nerve: Ability to move your eyes up and down or back and forth.
Trigeminal nerve: Sensations in your face and cheeks, taste and jaw movements.
Abducens nerve: Ability to move your eyes.
Facial nerve: Facial expressions and sense of taste.
Auditory/vestibular nerve: Sense of hearing and balance.
Glossopharyngeal nerve: Ability to taste and swallow.
Vagus nerve: Digestion and heart rate.
Accessory nerve (or spinal accessory nerve): Shoulder and neck muscle movement.
