👁️ How Does a Cataract Form?

Inside the eye, there is a clear natural lens that helps focus light onto the retina so we can see clearly. Over time, this lens can gradually become cloudy due to changes in the proteins within the lens. When these proteins clump together, they block light from passing through properly, which leads to the development of a cataract.

⚠️ Common causes and risk factors of cataracts include:

• Aging (most common cause) – Natural changes in the eye lens over time.
• UV exposure – Long-term exposure to sunlight without proper eye protection.
• Diabetes – High blood sugar levels can increase the risk of cataracts.
• Smoking – Harmful chemicals from smoking can damage the eye lens.
• Long-term steroid use – Certain medications may increase the likelihood of cataract formation.
• Eye injuries or previous eye surgery – Trauma to the eye can also lead to cataracts.
