Heatstroke: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It?

Heatstroke is a medical emergency that occurs when the body's core temperature rises above 104°F (40°C) and its natural cooling system fails. Unlike regular heat exhaustion, heatstroke can cause organ damage within minutes if untreated.

Why heatstroke happens?

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures overwhelms the body's ability to regulate heat through sweating. When fluid loss from dehydration outpaces intake, the body loses its main cooling mechanism. Physical exertion in direct sunlight, high humidity, and lack of rest breaks accelerate the rise in core temperature. Once sweating stops entirely, the skin becomes hot and dry, signaling that the body has lost control of its internal thermostat.

Early warning signs:
Dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, nausea, headache, and hot dry skin are early indicators. Recognizing these symptoms early can prevent a medical emergency.

Immediate response:
Move the person to shade or a cool area, remove excess clothing, apply cool water to the skin, and seek emergency medical care immediately. Heatstroke should always be treated as a medical emergency.

A short reel below shows how heatstroke can affect anyone exposed to extreme heat without proper precaution , a reminder of how quickly the condition can progress.

Sohail and Salma Hospital Trust provides round-the-clock emergency care for heat-related illnesses. Recognizing the signs early and acting fast can save a life.

Does your head start pounding and refuse to stop? You might be dealing with a migraine, not just a headache.

Migraines affect millions of people, yet most of us simply push through the pain or reach for painkillers without knowing there are simple remedies sitting right at home.

In our latest health series, Dr. Rabia Sohail walks you through seven home remedies that can genuinely ease migraine pain:
Sip on ginger tea to calm nausea and reduce discomfort. Apply a cold compress to the forehead or neck to numb the pain. Rest in a dark, quiet room, since light and sound are two of the biggest migraine triggers. Drink plenty of water, because dehydration triggers more migraines than most people realize. Massage diluted peppermint oil on your temples for a cooling, soothing effect. A small cup of coffee may help in moderation, though too much caffeine can backfire. And finally, a gentle lavender oil massage to help your body truly relax.

A word of care from our team: home remedies work well for mild migraine episodes, but if your migraines are frequent, severe, or getting worse, they deserve proper medical attention. Our doctors at Sohail and Salma Hospital is here to help you find real, lasting relief.

What do you usually do when a migraine hits? Share your go-to remedy in the comments, your tip might help someone else today.

Migraine does not just appear out of nowhere. It moves through four distinct stages, and recognizing them early can help you manage an attack before it takes over your day.

1. Stage one is prodrome, where subtle signs like fatigue, mood swings, neck stiffness, or food cravings show up hours or even days before the actual attack.
2. Stage two is aura, experienced by some people as visual disturbances, flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling sensations.
3. Stage three is the attack itself, marked by throbbing pain usually on one side of the head, along with nausea and heightened sensitivity to light and sound.
4. Stage four is postdrome, often called the migraine hangover, where exhaustion and brain fog can linger for up to a day after the pain subsides.

Learning to recognize these stages is one of the most effective tools for migraine management. It helps you identify your personal warning signs, track your triggers, and seek timely care before an attack escalates.

Migraine is not just a headache. It is a complex neurological condition that affects millions of people, often disrupting daily life, work, and sleep.

A migraine attack does not happen all at once. It moves through stages: early warning signs such as fatigue or mood changes, visual disturbances known as aura, intense throbbing pain usually on one side of the head, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and finally a draining recovery phase often called a migraine hangover.
Many people confuse migraine with a regular headache and delay seeking proper care. Understanding the difference is the first step toward effective migraine relief and long-term migraine management.

If you experience frequent headaches, throbbing head pain, or symptoms that interfere with your daily routine, it may be time to consult a neurologist. Early diagnosis can help identify your migraine triggers and the right treatment plan for you.
Sohail and Salma Hospital is here to help you understand your symptoms and find lasting relief.

Stay tuned as we break down the common causes and triggers of migraine, followed by practical prevention tips, in our next posts.

Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common yet overlooked health conditions affecting millions across Pakistan. At Sohail and Salma Hospital Trust, we believe that awareness is the first step toward better health.

What causes Vitamin D deficiency?
Limited sun exposure, indoor lifestyles, poor dietary intake, and darker skin tones that require longer sun exposure are among the leading causes. Women, the elderly, and people who cover most of their skin outdoors are at particularly high risk.

How to treat and prevent Vitamin D deficiency:
Get 10 to 30 minutes of direct midday sunlight on exposed skin at least three times a week. Include Vitamin D rich foods in your daily diet such as eggs, salmon, fortified milk, and cod liver oil. If your levels are clinically low, Vitamin D3 supplements between 1000 and 2000 IU daily are recommended under medical supervision. Always pair Vitamin D intake with magnesium and Vitamin K2 for proper absorption and bone health.

When should you get tested?
If you experience persistent fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, low immunity, or mood changes, consult your doctor and request a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood test. A level below 20 ng/mL indicates deficiency.

At Sohail and Salma Hospital Trust, our team of experienced physicians and specialists is available to diagnose, treat, and guide you through your Vitamin D recovery plan.
