𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 (𝐏𝐊𝐋𝐈&𝐑𝐂) has achieved another historic milestone by successfully performing the 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝟏𝟎-𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 (𝐋𝐃𝐋𝐓) 𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐏 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧, enabling ten patients to receive life-saving liver transplants through a coordinated donor exchange program.

In an extraordinary feat of surgical innovation and coordination, all ten donor-recipient exchanges were completed within a single 24-hour period. Through a carefully designed exchange system, each donor was matched with a compatible recipient while maintaining the highest 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜, 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥, 𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 standards of living donation.

Speaking on this milestone, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐫, 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐊𝐋𝐈&𝐑𝐂, congratulated the entire team for setting a new benchmark in organ transplantation. He noted that 𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐏 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is an established and ethical practice permitted under Pakistan’s regulations. The ten recipients came from across Pakistan, including Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, highlighting the potential of donor exchange networks to overcome geographic barriers and expand access to transplantation.

Building on this success, PKLI has proposed a 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐏 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 to establish a centralized registry for incompatible donor-recipient pairs, enabling advanced matching and equitable access to transplantation nationwide.

This breakthrough offers a model for donor exchange programs worldwide and reinforces PKLI’s leadership in transplantation innovation.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI), Lahore, has achieved what it says is the world’s first 10-way living donor liver transplant swap chain, carrying out 20 major operations involving 10 donors and 10 recipients within a single 24-hour period and creating transplant opportunities for patients whose family donors were medically incompatible.
