🌡️ High Fever in Children: What Parents Should Do

A high fever itself is not usually dangerous—it is often a sign that the body is fighting an infection. The child's overall condition is more important than the temperature on the thermometer.

✅ Keep your child well hydrated with frequent fluids or ORS.
✅ Dress them in light clothing and keep the room comfortably cool.
✅ Give Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) 10–15 mg/kg/dose every 4–6 hours if the child is uncomfortable or in pain (maximum 5 doses in 24 hours).
✅ If the child is older than 6 months, Ibuprofen 5–10 mg/kg/dose every 6–8 hours may be used (avoid if dehydrated, persistent vomiting, kidney disease, or chickenpox).
❌ Do not give aspirin to children.
❌ Do not use ice baths or alcohol rubs—they are ineffective and may be harmful.
❌ Antibiotics should only be used when prescribed by a doctor for a confirmed or suspected bacterial infection.

🚨 Seek urgent medical care if your child has:
• Age below 3 months with a temperature ≥38°C (100.4°F)
• Difficulty breathing
• Persistent lethargy, confusion, or difficulty waking
• Repeated vomiting or inability to drink
• Seizures
• Rash that does not fade when pressed
• Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, sunken eyes, very little urine)
• Fever lasting more than 3 days or recurring frequently

Remember: Treat the child, not just the number on the thermometer.
