Piriformis Syndrome & Sciatica
๐ท What is Piriformis Syndrome?
Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve, usually in the buttock region.
๐ท Why does it cause sciatica-like pain?
The sciatic nerve passes very close toโand sometimes throughโthe piriformis muscle. When the muscle becomes tight, irritated, or swollen, it may affect the nerve.
๐ท Common symptoms:
โ Pain in the buttock
โ Pain radiating down the back of the thigh or leg
โ Tingling or numbness
โ Pain that may worsen with prolonged sitting
โ Discomfort during walking, running, or hip movement
๐ท Important medical point:
Piriformis syndrome is not the most common cause of sciatica. Lumbar spine conditions such as disc herniation and nerve-root compression are much more common. Therefore, persistent or severe sciatic pain should be properly assessed.
๐จ Seek urgent medical attention if back/leg pain is accompanied by new bladder or bowel dysfunction, saddle numbness, or significant/progressive leg weakness.
