Researchers pooled individual data from ten long term studies across Australia, Europe and the United States, all of which measured hormones with mass spectrometry and followed men for at least five years. Men in the lowest fifth of testosterone levels had roughly an 18 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than men in the highest fifth, with the risk beginning to rise below 8.6 nmol/L. Very low testosterone was also linked to a higher chance of being diagnosed with cancer, though notably not prostate cancer, which tracked more closely with two other hormones instead. Healthy young men typically sit somewhere between 10 and 30 nmol/L. The researchers were clear that this is not a case for taking testosterone supplements, because low levels often reflect other problems such as obesity, diabetes, chronic illness or inactivity, and are better treated as a prompt for a full health check.
