Speech therapy is not just about teaching a child to talk. It begins with developing pre-speech skills, which are the foundation of communication.
We first work on attention, eye contact, engagement, joint attention, imitation, and turn-taking. Then we focus on receptive language and functional communication.
Once these foundational skills are strong, we begin teaching speech sounds, words, phrases, and sentences.

PECS Phase 1 teaches a child to communicate by exchanging a picture for a desired item. The child picks up the picture, gives it to the communication partner, and immediately receives the preferred item with praise. The goal is to develop spontaneous communication and help the child understand that exchanging a picture is an effective way to request what they want.
