By Maidah Khan
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can present differently in every child, but early identification can make a world of difference. Here are some signs parents and caregivers might notice in toddlers:
👶 Social Interaction Differences
Limited eye contact
Doesn't respond to name by 12 months
Rarely shows interest in others (smiling, pointing, or sharing)
🗣️ Communication Challenges
Delayed speech or language skills
May repeat words/phrases (echolalia)
Struggles with gestures like waving or nodding
🧠 Behavioral Patterns
Repetitive movements (hand-flapping, rocking)
Strong preference for routines
Intense interest in specific objects or topics
🎯 What to Do
If you’re noticing some of these signs, don’t panic—but don’t delay either. Talk to a pediatrician, and consider a developmental screening.
