🦵 IT Band Syndrome (Iliotibial Band Syndrome) | Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Physiotherapy Treatment
Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries affecting runners, cyclists, and active individuals. It occurs when the iliotibial band becomes irritated due to repetitive friction over the lateral femoral epicondyle, causing pain on the outer side of the knee.
✅causes
Repetitive running or cycling
✔ Sudden increase in training intensity
✔ Weak hip abductors and gluteal muscles
✔ Tight iliotibial band (IT Band)
✔ Poor running mechanics
✔ Foot overpronation
✔ Leg length discrepancy
✔ Inadequate warm-up or recovery
‼️Common Symptoms:❓
• Pain on the outer (lateral) side of the knee
• Pain during running, cycling, or walking downhill
• Tenderness over the lateral femoral epicondyle
• Tightness along the outer thigh
• Pain that worsens with prolonged activity
• Clicking or snapping sensation (sometimes)
💝Physiotherapy Treatment:
✔ Detailed Physical Assessment
✔ Pain Relief Modalities
✔ Manual Therapy & Soft Tissue Release
✔ IT Band, Hip Flexor & Quadriceps Stretching
✔ Gluteus Medius & Hip Abductor Strengthening
✔ Core Stability Exercises
✔ Balance & Proprioception Training
✔ Gait & Running Biomechanics Correction
✔ Activity Modification
✔ Home Exercise Program
Early diagnosis and physiotherapy help reduce pain, improve movement, prevent recurrence, and safely return to sports and daily activities.
