Under the leadership of 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗠. 𝗜𝗾𝗯𝗮𝗹 surgical team comprising of 𝗔/𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗶 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘆, Senior Registrar 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗺, Spine Fellows 𝗗𝗿. 𝗭𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝗾𝗯𝗮𝗹 and 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠. 𝗡𝗼𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻, together with our dedicated nursing, physiotherapy and allied health teams, continues to provide advanced care for complex spinal disorders.

This case of 𝗷𝘂𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 was successfully managed with corrective spine surgery. The patient was mobilized on the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆, and the joy of the patient and family reflects the life-changing impact of timely surgical intervention.

This case highlights an important message: 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, especially when diagnosed early. Early detection and timely management can prevent progressive deformity, disability and long-term functional impairment.

پروفیسر ڈاکٹر اقبال صاحب کے ساتھ آرتھوپیڈکس پی جی آرز کی ہائی۔ ٹی

ہسپتال کی مصروف زندگی میں کچھ لمحے ایسے ہوتے ہیں جو وارڈ کی بھاگ دوڑ، او پی ڈی کے رش اور آپریشن تھیٹر کی ٹینشن سے الگ ایک تازہ ہوا کا جھونکا لے کر آتے ہیں۔ ایسی ہی ایک شام آرتھوپیڈکس ڈیپارٹمنٹ کا ایک نجی ہوٹل میں "ہائی۔ ٹی پروفیسر ڈاکٹر اقبال"کے ساتھ اہتمام کیا گیا۔

سکرَب سے سموسے تک کا سفر
۔ میز پر چائے کی پیالیاں، پکوڑے، سینڈوچ اور کیک سجے تھے۔ سامنے وہی پی جی آرز بیٹھے تھے جو صبح سے پلستر، پلاسٹر آف پیرس اور پروکسیمل فیمر فریکچر میں الجھے ہوئے تھے۔ مگر آج سب کے چہروں پر تھکن کی بجائے مسکراہٹ تھی۔ کیونکہ آج *"سر"* یعنی پروفیسر ڈاکٹر اقبال صاحب صرف استاد نہیں، میزبان بن کر آئے تھے۔

چائے کی پہلی چسکی اور برف ٹوٹ گئی
ڈاکٹر اقبال صاحب نے چائے اٹھاتے ہی کہا: *"بیٹا، ہڈی جوڑنا تو ہم سکھا ہی دیں گے، پہلے انسان جوڑنا سیکھو"*۔ بس، ماحول کا سارا بوجھل پن ختم۔ جونیئر پی جی آر نے ہمت کر کے پوچھ لیا: *"سر، آپ کے زمانے میں نائٹ ڈیوٹی کیسی ہوتی تھی؟"*۔ جواب میں 30 سال پرانے قصے نکل آئے — جب وارڈ میں پنکھا نہیں ہوتا تھا، ایکسرے فلم دھونا پڑتی تھی، سب ہنسے، اور سمجھ گئے کہ ہر دور کی اپنی آزمائش ہوتی ہے۔

ہائی ٹی کا اصل فائدہ یہ تھا کہ یہاں *"وائیوا"* نہیں ہو رہا تھا۔ بات نکلی تو *"کیریئر کونسلنگ"* پر آ گئی۔ سر نے سمجھایا: *"آرتھوپیڈکس صرف راڈ اور پلیٹ کا نام نہیں۔ مریض کی نفسیات سمجھو۔ 80 سال کی دادی کا فیمر ٹوٹے تو اسے چلنے کے ساتھ حوصلہ بھی چاہیے"*۔ کسی نے FCPS کا ڈر بتایا، تو کسی نے بیرون ملک جانے کا پوچھا۔ جواب ایک ہی تھا: *"اسکل سیکھو، شارٹ کٹ نہیں۔ ہاتھ میں صفائی ہو گی تو دنیا خود بلائے گی"۔

چائے کے ساتھ ساتھ سینئر PGR نے سر کے *"فیمس ڈانٹنے کے اسٹائل"* کی نقل اتاری تو قہقہے گونج اٹھے۔ خود ڈاکٹر صاحب بھی ہنس دیے: *"ڈانٹتا اسی کو ہوں جس سے امید ہو"*۔ آخر میں گروپ فوٹو ہوئی۔ سکرَب کی بجائے سب نے کندھے پر ہاتھ رکھے ہوئے تھے — ایک ٹیم، ایک فیملی.

وہ ایک گھنٹے کی ہائی ٹی *تھیسس، لاگ بک اور کال سے زیادہ قیمتی تھی۔ کیونکہ وہاں ہم نے سیکھا کہ *بڑا سرجن وہ نہیں جس کے ہاتھ سیدھے ہوں، بڑا انسان وہ ہے جس کا دل مریض اور جونیئر دونوں کے لیے دھڑکے۔

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, King Edward Medical University / Mayo Hospital Lahore, successfully conducted the Fortnightly Meeting of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Lahore, coupled with a Farewell Tribute to A/Professor Dr. Muhammad Akram, on Saturday, 25th April 2026 at the Audio Visual Room, Patiala Block, KEMU.
The event was headed by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal (HOD, Orthopaedic Unit 1) and was graced by the presence of distinguished senior faculty including Prof. Qazi Saeed, Prof. Abubakar, Prof. Zia ul Bajwa, Prof. Tanveer Afzal, Prof. Sohail Razaq, Prof. Saeed Asif Shah, Prof. Faisal Masood, A/Prof Dr subhan shahid,A/Prof. Dr sohail niazi, A/Prof.Dr umair abubakar, and A/prof.Dr shakeel.
The session commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Dr. Arslan, followed by a warm welcome address by A/Professor Dr. Muhammad Akram, who acknowledged the presence of respected faculty and extended gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayaz, for his continued support.
The academic segment featured case presentations by Dr. Arslan, Dr. Asim Sohail, Dr. Zeeshan Chaudhary, and Dr. M. Umar, covering key subspecialties including spine, hand & upper limb, sports surgery, and orthopaedic oncology. The presentations were highly appreciated for their academic depth and clinical relevance.
A dedicated farewell session was held in honor of A/Professor Dr. Muhammad Akram, where the Vice Chancellor and senior faculty paid rich tribute to his remarkable contributions to orthopaedic surgery, teaching, and patient care.
As a token of appreciation, shields, bouquets, and gifts were presented to Dr. Akram by faculty members and residents, recognizing his lifelong dedication and invaluable service to the department.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, acknowledging the participation of all attendees and the successful conduct of the event.

Subject: Establishment of Dedicated Spine Surgery Unit – A Significant Milestone
Today marks an important milestone for the Department of Orthopaedic & Spine Surgery, Mayo Hospital Lahore, as the first formal step has been taken towards the establishment of a dedicated Spine Surgery Unit.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayaz, along with the Registrar Dr. Asghar Naqi and the administration of Mayo Hospital Lahore, visited the department to review the proposed spine unit. During the visit, dedicated male and female patient bays were presented, and the visitors were briefed on the progress already achieved.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, Head of the Department, provided a comprehensive overview of the project, emphasizing its potential to significantly enhance patient care, structured training, and resident education. He highlighted the need for collaborative efforts between the university, hospital administration, and the Government of Punjab to further strengthen this initiative.
Dr. Shahid Ali Chaudhary, A/Professor and Spine Surgeon, presented detailed outcomes of successfully managed complex spine cases performed under limited resources—many of which represent pioneering efforts within public sector institutions of Punjab.
This initiative represents the foundation of the first dedicated Spine Surgery Unit of its kind in the public sector, with the vision to evolve into a centre of excellence for spine care, training, and research.
The dedicated Spine team Headed by Prof.M iqbal was introduced, including:
Dr. Shahid Ali Chaudhary (A/Professor, Spine Surgery)
Dr. Jawad (Senior Registrar, Spine Surgery)
Dr. Rehman Azmat (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon)
Dr. Talha (Registrar)
Dr. Zeeshan Chaudhary (Resident)
Dr. Samaar Iqbal (Resident)
Dr. M. Nouman (Resident)
along with a committed team of nursing staff and allied health professionals, including physiotherapy students.
The Vice Chancellor appreciated the initiative and emphasized the importance of developing supra-specialty training programs, including MS and FCPS fellowships in Spine Surgery, following due regulatory processes. He reiterated the need for sustained collaboration to ensure the success of this initiative.
A formal appreciation was presented by the Spine team, acknowledging the support and encouragement extended by the university leadership and hospital administration. The department remains optimistic about the timely establishment of the dedicated Spine Unit and the initiation of structured residency and fellowship training programs in the near future.
