Tissue Expansion for the Scalp

Scalp tissue expansion is a reconstructive technique used to generate additional hair-bearing scalp skin for the reconstruction of scalp defects and alopecia. It provides the best color, texture, thickness, and hair match because the patient's own scalp is expanded.

Indications
Reconstruction after excision of scalp tumors
Post-burn scalp alopecia
Traumatic scalp defects
Congenital scalp lesions (e.g., large nevus)
Scar alopecia following surgery or injury

Scalp tissue expansion remains the gold standard for reconstructing medium to large scalp defects when adjacent healthy hair-bearing scalp is available.
